Queen Sees House Conversion Exhibition -- The sun shines as the Queen, wearing a light summer dress, is shown the Ministry of Housing and Local Government's exhibition in Holles Street, off oxford street, London, by the Minister, Mr. Harold Macmillan, today (Tuesday). The exhibition demonstrates how an old house (the one on the left) can be made more suitable for its occupants (as has been done in the other houses here). The buildings in the exhibition are replicas of 19th-century terrace houses. The one in its 'original' condition has no bathroom, hot water, or electricity and is assumed to belong to an elderly war veterna of 74 who suffers from rheumatism and whose wife finds the stairs difficult to manage. Automaton is Absent: Looking down onto the courtyard of Somerset House is a very fine example of British craftmanship. It is the new coat-of-Arms of George III that has been hand-carved out of specially selected blocks of Portland Stone. The old Coat-of-Arms had suffered the ravages of time, and was dangerous to such an extent that its only use was to serve as a guide to the creation of the new. In something like six months, Mr. C.A.Randall (left) and Mr. F. Wills (top) have created this perfect specimen under the direction of Mr. H.Wadley (chief stone carver) and the architect, Mr. E.G.Edwards (extreme right) of the Historical Building section of the Ministry of Works. The last time Phil and Rosetta Davenport travelled from Australia to London it took them just a few days - rather boring days. This time it took them nine months - every hour a thriller. The "few days" trip was by air when Phil, 33, was a pilot, Rosetta, 26, an air hostess. The journey that ended yesterday in the Pool of London was made in a tiny 46ft. yacht, Waltzing Matilda. A year ago Phil gave up flying, married Rosetta, and bought the boat. "As soon as I met planned," I knew I'd found a mate for the trip I'd always planned," he said as he sat on deck with her after they anchored in the Thomas yesterday. His brother Keith, 28, and friend, Don Brown, 27, signed as crew and the four set sail for England. September 03, 1951.

This Lamp Saves Lives -- Mr. Wood, the inventor, is seen demonstration the lamp. For this invention he was honoured with the Mr. B.D. Civil Division, in the British New Year's Honors. This picture shows one of the greatest British life-saving inspirations of the war - a special red lamp on the life jacket, which, when switched on in the water, shows the position of seaman and airmen who are to be rescued. Previously many lives were lost because men from torpedoed ships could not be found in the darkness of the night. The first lamps to be finished were worn by the members of a Norwegian ship; the ship was torpedoed on her first night out, but every lamp worked and every member of the crew was saved.
