This Lamp Saves Lives -- Mr. Wood, the inventor, is seen demonstration the lamp. For this invention he was honoured with the Mr. B.D. Civil Division, in the British New Year's Honors. This picture shows one of the greatest British life-saving inspirations of the war - a special red lamp on the life jacket, which, when switched on in the water, shows the position of seaman and airmen who are to be rescued. Previously many lives were lost because men from torpedoed ships could not be found in the darkness of the night. The first lamps to be finished were worn by the members of a Norwegian ship; the ship was torpedoed on her first night out, but every lamp worked and every member of the crew was saved. December 6, 1943.
