Automaton is Absent: Looking down onto the courtyard of Somerset House is a very fine example of British craftmanship. It is the new coat-of-Arms of George III that has been hand-carved out of specially selected blocks of Portland Stone. The old Coat-of-Arms had suffered the ravages of time, and was dangerous to such an extent that its only use was to serve as a guide to the creation of the new. In something like six months, Mr. C.A.Randall (left) and Mr. F. Wills (top) have created this perfect specimen under the direction of Mr. H.Wadley (chief stone carver) and the architect, Mr. E.G.Edwards (extreme right) of the Historical Building section of the Ministry of Works. September 19, 1955.
