Frenchman Georges Sablier demonstrates his portable helicopter, winner of a special award at the international helicopter competition and show in Saint Etienne Wednesday. The flying windmill, which weighs about 60 pounds, is strapped over the shoulders. New Flying-Boat For B.O.A.C. -- The first of the 12 Short "Solent" flying-boats ordered by BOAC for the Far East service was launched at Rochester recently. The plane is powered by four Bristol Hercules engines, and it has day accommodation for 30 or 24 in berths in five cabins. ***** is 112 feet, length 60 feet, and range of ***** miles at a speed of 210 m.p.h. New 21-Passenger Plane Arrives -- New Giant Airliner for Australian National Airway being landed from the freighter Clydebank in Melbourne today. She is a 21-passenger Douglas DC3. Gas Turbine Powers Helicopter -- The U.S. Navy announced today the first successful flight by a gas turbine shaft powered helicopter. William R. Murray of Wilton, Conn., a former Navy pilot is shown at teh controls of the experimental K-225 as it hovers over Bradley Field, Windsor Locks, Conn., during a test flight. First of the giant C-133A turboprop cargo planes to be completed for the Air Force rolled out of the hangar today at the Douglas Long Beach plant. The huge new airplane, with twice the payload capacity of the largest military transports now in service, is expected to set new standards of performance as a global carrier of air cargo. No Strings Attached -- The pilot prepares to take off in the one-man helicopter. The U.S. Air Force recently completed successful tests on a one-man helicopter designed for rescue and communication work. A similar machine was recently completed by a Salford England, motor mechanic, but its designer has been refused a licence enabling to test it properly. Regulations allow him to fly his helicopter to a height of 10 feet only - and the machine must by tethered to the ground. Pilot Can Take It Lying Down -- Pilot lying in the nose of this specially modified meter jet aircraft can take over control of the plane from the other pilot sitting in the conventional cockpit farther back. The plane has been modified by Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft for the Ministry of supply's research into the advantages and disadvantage of flying a plane from the prone position. America's first turboprop seaplane transport -- the Convair R3Y Tradewind -- races down San Diego Bay for its maiden flight. Built by Convair's San Diego Division for the U. S. Navy, the 80-ton seaplane took off in less than 30 seconds and was flown during a shakedown test program for more than two hours on its first flight. Upon completion of the flight, Convair Test Pilot Don Germeraad said: "I have flown many types of seaplanes, but the R3Y is the best I've ever handled." February 25, 1954.
