Britain's Giant Takes The Air Maiden Flight Of World's Largest Aircraft -- Taking the air on its maiden flight today from London Airport is the Brabazon, largest aircraft in the world. It carried only 26 passengers instead of its full possible load of about one hundred and was in the air for half-an-hour. Among the passengers were members of parliament and aeronautical scientists. Helicopter on Mount Blanc French pilot Jean Moine is shown here beside his American Bell 47-G helicopter atop mount blanc, 15, 781 feet, Europe's highest mountain, yesterday June 6. He claims this is a new record for the highest helicopter landing - the previous record was held by a Frenchman who landed on the jungfrau, 13, 653 feet, in Switzerland.. Moine, who took mountain guide Andre Contanine as a passenger, spent about four minutes on the peak. June 23, 1955. (Photo by Associated Press Phot

"The American-Japanese Apple Incident"This photo was snapped in September, 1931, showing the American aviators Clyde Panghorn and Hugh Herndon with their world-circuling plane "Miss Veedol" at Sabishiro beach, Aomori Prefecture, where they landed on their long hop and took off on the last lap of their flight across the Pacific. When the apple-growers of Aomori found out that Mr. Panghorn was a native of Wenatches Valley, Washington State, famous for its "Richared Delicious" apples, they presented him with a few of their product as souvenir. Fuel For Berlin By The Airlift Coalmen -- A lorry loaded with sacks of coal passes under the nose of the "aerial coalman", a giant Ha stings aircraft, at Schleswigland. The first of the new giant air freighters, the Royal Air Force Handley Page Hastings, are now being used on the air lift to Berlin, Germany. They are operating from the ex-Luftwaffe night-fighter station at Schleswigland where 19,000 tons of soil has been remove and 7,000 tons of concrete laid in the last 15 days to get the aerodrome ready for the giant aircraft that can make the trip to Berlin in one hour and carry a load of nearly 7½ tons. Backing Up The "Air-Lift" -- Honington is busiest at night, when aircraft are loaded so that at first light they may take off for bases in Germany. Here a giant wheel for a York aircraft, grounded at Wunstorf, Germany, is trundled out to a waiting Dakota of "Operation Plumber." An important if unspectacular link in the maintenance of the Royal Air Force's contribution to the "Air-Lift" into blockaded Berlin is "Operation Plumber." This is the R.A.F.'s name for the major servicing unit of transport Command at Honington, Suffolk, where a fleet of six Dakota are kept busy flying unserviceable aircraft parts back from Germany and taking out immediate replacements. Each aircraft is capable of carrying seven and a half tons and will be used mainly for transporting coal. The squadron will work from a specially prepared airfield about 25 miles outside Kiel.
