Radio Industry Passes Export Target -- The British Radio Industry has decided not to hold a Radio Exhibition this year in order that manufacturers may concentrate upon their export programme which is forging ahead with great success. The export target of £1m set the industry by Sir Stafford Cripps was passed in December last when equipment to the value of £1,013,162 was sold a broad. This picture was taken at the huge Electrical and Musical Industries (EMI) factory at Hayes, Middlesex, where much of the export work is carried on. Police have taken charge of the part of the 85,000 ton liner Queen Elizabeth, where fire broke out and blazed for nearly two hours as the vessel lay in Southampton Docks. Tragic Level - Crossing smash at Hawkesbury River, NSW., When the Kempsey Mail train crashed into a bus at a level-crossing near Hawkesbury River (NSW) station on January 20, 16 bus passengers were killed. Malabar, the Navy's name for its Bermuda Dockyard which was closed last March, is being brought back to Britain. Queen Mary At Bedford College -- Her Majesty Queen Mary is guided by Miss G.E.M. Jebb, M.A., during her visit to Bedford college for Women, London of which Queen Mary is patroness, today May 19. Miss Jebb is principal at the college which today celebrated its centenary. It is the oldest women's college in England. It was founded in 1849 by Elisabeth Reid, wife of a London Doctor, and the original buildings were in Bedford Square. In 1913, the college moved to Regents Park, and Queen Mary opened the present College Buildings on July 4 of that year. During the war, when the college was evacuated to Cambridge, about one third of the building was destroyed in an air raid. It is hoped that a rebuilding programme will be complete in 1952. At the beginning of the present session 837 students were in attendance. One hundred years ago 68 pupils enrolled for the opening term of the first women's college. June 22, 1949.
