Limestone statue of a man holding a mask in the form of a bull's head 2nd half of 4th century B.C. Cypriot From the Late Bronze Age onward bull's heads played a role in certain religious rituals on Cyprus. Actual skulls with openings at the back to be worn as masks, terracotta bull's heads, and figures wearing bull's heads as masks have been found on the island, suggesting that some deity was worshiped in this manner. This statue probably represents a priest holding such a mask, which he would have worn during some solemn rite, perhaps for a god associated with fertility.. Fragment of a Grave Monument 400 BCE-201 BCE Greece. When this object came to the Art Institute, it was cracked in two. Experts even questioned whether the fragments belonged together, as they were misaligned and of different colors. Upon examination, it was found that the two parts were joined by lead dowels that had caused the skewed alignment, and that they were, in fact, a perfect match. The discoloration was caused by weathering that had occurred while the object lay buried in different areas of iron-rich soil. After removing the lead dowels, the two fragments were cleaned using high-pressure steam and both synthetic and paper-based poultices. Conservators created a special fill made of paper, resin, and marble dust to craft a seamless join. The pieces were then joined with an adhesive before filling in the crack and associated losses.. The himation is kept in place in part by a tasselled weight, thrown over his left shoulder, which hangs at his calf. A rare detail, several horizontal bands decorate the fabric, and may have been painted or gilded. Marble statue of an old fisherman 1st or 2nd century A.D. Roman Copy of a Greek statue of the late 3rd century B.C.The effects of hard work and age are powerfully rendered in this representation. A more complete replica in Rome preserves the head and a basket of fish on the left arm, indicating that the stooped figure must be a fisherman. Since his voluminous cloak seems ill-suited to work, he is probably headed for a festival, as is the statue of an aged woman carrying chickens and a basket of fruit, which stands nearby. During the Hellenistic period, genre statues of this type were dedicated in temples and sanctuaries, sometimes in landscape settings. Wealthy Romans often placed their copies in gardens and parks.Displayed between the nearby columns is a small head of an elderly man wearing a peasants cap that comes from a similar statue and may also represent a fisherman.. Date: ca. 1417.This sensitively carved mourner comes from the tomb of Fernando de Antequera, king of Aragon (d. 1416), in the royal pantheon at the abbey of Poblet near Barcelona.
