Marble and limestone statue of an attendant. Culture: Greek, South Italian, Tarentine. Dimensions: H.: 48 7/16 in. (123 cm). Date: late 4th or 3rd century B.C..This young woman held an object in her right hand, perhaps a fan. The statue was originally likely part of a funerary group of an aristocratic woman with her attendant that would have served as a tomb marker. It was not uncommon during the Hellenistic period in Southern Italy to carve the heads of significant commissions in imported marble and use local limestone for the bodies. The Greek city of Tarentum had a particularly distinctive sculptural tradition of limestone funerary monuments, other fragmentary examples of which can be seen in the nearby case for luxury arts of Southern Italy. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Saint James the Greater ca. 1450-75 French Saint James the Greater is shown in his traditional medieval guise of a pilgrim, wearing a soft brim hat emblazoned with a cockleshell emblem and holding a book and a staff (now lost). His shrine at Santiago de Compostela in Spain was the third most popular pilgrimage site after Jerusalem and Rome. The statue was discovered together with the statue of Saint John the Baptist (exhibited nearby) in a garden-wall niche outside the church of Mouthier-le-Vieillard in Poligny (southeast of Dijon). These sculptures bear the marked influence of an earlier generation of sculptors, principally, Claus Sluter (active 1379-d.1406) and Claux de Werve (active 1396-d.1439), both of whom worked for Duke Philip the Bold.. Saint James the Greater. French. ca. 1450-75. Limestone with traces of paint. Made in Poligny, Burgundy, France. Sculpture-Stone

Anubis as Defender of Osiris / Dionysus () A.D. 2nd-3rd century, probably Roman Period Elements from Egyptian and Greek mythology are combined in this delicate figure. The view taken here is that Anubis is represented, wearing military costume and breastplate that signify his role as a fighter against the enemies of Osiris. He holds a staff topped by a cone-shaped object - the thyrsus carried by followers of Dionysus with whom the Greeks equated Osiris. In his other hand he carries a falcon. On the other hand, the snout and ears appear short for Anubis and more like those of a cat, and the short dress can be worn by Artemis who is associated with Bastet. The identity of the figure is, therefore, not certain.. Anubis as Defender of Osiris / Dionysus (). A.D. 2nd-3rd century, probably. gold. Roman Period. From Egypt

Medea 1865; carved 1868 William Wetmore Story American In the ancient Greek tragedy by Euripides, Medea was the sorceress who assisted Jason in obtaining the Golden Fleece and later became his wife. When he abandoned her, Medea murdered their two children and planned the death of his new love, Creusa. To nineteenth-century theater audiences, Medea was a sympathetic character forced to choose between relinquishing her children and protecting them by destroying them herself. Story similarly deemphasized Medeas revenge, leaving to the viewers imagination the scene of infanticide to come. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #4392. Christian Charity 19th century After a composition by Bertel Thorvaldsen Danish This work is a highly finished study for one of four marble reliefs originally conceived in 1807-8 for the baptismal font of the Church at Brahe-Trollenberg, but subsequently rejected by the church. Early accounts state that the marble was executed for the third Marquess of Lansdowne in 1810, and in 1822 in order to raise money for a destitute Norwegian officer. This relief appears to precede a plaster cast original model from 1810.. Christian Charity. After a composition by Bertel Thorvaldsen (Danish, Copenhagen 1770-1844 Copenhagen). Danish. 19th century.
