Goan craftsman were renowned for their supple modeling of ivory (likely exported from Mozambique) into Christian icons, which feed the appetite for luxury products in Europe, as well as furthered evangelical missions throughout Asia and the Americas. Within the genre of Indo-Portuguese ivories, popular subjects include Christ as the Good Shepard’ (the image of Christ as child would have related to similar bronze statuettes of the God Krishna) and the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception,’ which shows Mary atop a crescent moon, both of which remain ever-present icons in South Asia’s diverse religious landscape.

Above her hair are six folds of the infula, a long woollen band wrapped about the head to hang in two loops (vittae), passed behind the ears. Head of Christ late 15th-early 16th century Netherlandish Piety in the late Middle Ages encouraged the believer's intense emotional empathy in the suffering of Christ. Here, stone is transformed into flesh by the actual wood thorns piercing the forehead. The capacity for sculptural naturalism developed in Burgundy by Claus Sluter (ca. 1360-before 1406) and Niclaus Gerhaert von Leiden (active 1460-73) here endows the noble face of the dead Christ with an uncanny intensity. Maud Morgan. Artist: Olin Levi Warner (American, West Suffield, Connecticut 1844-1896 New York). Dimensions: 22 3/4 x 7 1/4 x 10 in. (57.8 x 18.4 x 25.4 cm). Date: 1880, cast 1897-98.Warner may have been inspired to model a portrait of harpist Maud Morgan (1860-1941) after seeing her perform in New York. There is no evidence of a commission, so presumably the sculptor undertook the subject on his own initiative. His treatment of the bust integrated antique forms with the naturalistic features of Morgan's face. Morgan's filleted hair, blank eyes, and fragmented shoulder termination align the bust with antique prototypes. While her round face and delicate lips imply classicizing simplicity and refinement, they also truthfully represented the features of the harpist. The modeling and expression of the portrait tie it to the French Beaux Arts tradition. The irregular shoulder truncation is in the manner of Warner's teacher Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. Tomb Effigy Bust of Marie de France (1327-41), daughter of Charles IV of France and Jeanne d'Evreux ca. 1381 Jean de Liège Franco-Netherlandish The Royal Abbey of Saint-Denis was the burial church for the rulers of France and their families. This elegant image once formed a part of the tomb effigy of the princess Marie de France (1326-1341) and her sister Blanche de France (1328-1393), daughters of Charles IV (1294-1328) and Jeanne dEvreux (before 1313-1371). Although Marie died young, her effigy was not carved until about 1381 by the court sculptor Jean de Liège. Many of the tombs in the abbey were vandalized in the wake of the French Revolution. Originally the head rested upon a stone pillow, and the princess wore a metal crown. Her braided hair is arranged in the courtly fashion contemporary with the carving of the bust.
