Study for a Portrait of Mathilde Salle modeled ca. 1892, cast 1920 Edgar Degas French Upon Degas's death in 1917, more than 150 figurative sculptures were found in his studio. Most were made of fragile wax, clay, and plastiline (a wax- and oil-based modeling material). Many had deteriorated. Only a few were preserved in copies that had been cast from them in plaster. Except for the wax Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (Washington: NGA) none of these sculptures had been publicly exhibited during the artists lifetime.Although Degas had not favored reproducing his sculptures in more permanent materials, his heirs authorized that copies be cast in bronze in order to preserve the compositions and to sell them as finished works. Paul-Albert Bartholomé, a sculptor and Degas's longtime friend, prepared 72 of the figures for casting, a process executed by the distinguished Paris foundry A.-A. Hébrard et Cie. The quality of the Degas bronzes was tightly controlled and their edition was limited.

Reliquary Bust of Saint Balbina ca. 1520-30 South Netherlandish Medieval reliquaries often took the form of the body parts they were created to contain. Bust reliquaries for the skulls of saints were placed on or near altars and, by the late Middle Ages, were assembled in large numbers in some church sanctuaries, from Cologne in the north to Ubeda in southern Spain. These examples, with elaborate jewels, beautifully braided hair, and richly decorated gowns, probably represent companions of the virgin martyr Saint Ursula, believed to have been eleven thousand in number. The small glazed medallions resembling jewelry once displayed additional relics. On particular feast days, such busts could be carried in processions.. Reliquary Bust of Saint Balbina. South Netherlandish. ca. 1520-30. Oak, paint, gilt. Made in possibly Brussels, Belgium. Sculpture-Wood

Plaque, female face 100 BC-100 AD Ptolemaic Period-Roman Period A mosaic glass technique allowed multiples of an image to be created: a figural or design composition was made by bundling colored glass canes, which were then drawn out into a long bar. The bar was then sectioned at right angles, probably by striking the bar with appropriate tools, to produce small inlay tiles. The tile would then be smoothed and polished on the face intended to appear outwards.Such elements could also be used side by side to create repeating patterns. Or if the rod presented one half of an element that was symmetrical, such as a face, a tile and a reversed tile from the same rod could be put together to form a complete whole, as here.Link to a blog about Ptolemaic Art at The MetNile and Newcomers: A Fresh Installation of Egyptian Ptolemaic Art.
