Officer on right looks on cheerfully. Streaming into Britain today, in overwhelming numbers, come these men of Hitler's vanquished "Wehrmacht". Captured in batches by the victorious Allied Armies of the West, they are illustrated here, arriving at a Southern Port. Some happy to be out of it. Some arrogant, others dejected. Some, who thought they could escape their captors, changed into civilian clothes, and were still wearing them upon arrival. They range form elderly Corps Commanders to youngsters in their 'teens, who had less then a moth's military training. September 27, 1944. (Photo by Fox Photos).

Laurence Short was once a communist. Now he is the Reds implacable enemy. How he beat them - he was bashed and threatened in the process - is one of the most dramatic stories of Australian unionism. It is the story of one determined man against a cunning political machine, of ballot-faking and double-crossing, subterfuge and plain dishonesty. August 27, 1952.
