This approximate natural-color image shows Saturn, its rings, and four of its icy satellites. Three satellites (Tethys, Dione, and Rhea) are visible against the darkness of space, and another smaller satellite (Mimas) is visible against Saturn's cloud tops very near the left horizon and just below the rings. The dark shadows of Mimas and Tethys are also visible on Saturn's cloud tops, and the shadow of Saturn is seen across part of the rings. Saturn, second in size only to Jupiter in our Solar System, is 120,660 km (75,000 mi) in diameter at its equator (the ring plane) but, because of its rapid spin, Saturn is 10% smaller measured through its poles. Saturn's rings are composed mostly of ice particles ranging from microscopic dust to boulders in size. These particles orbit Saturn in a vast disk that is a mere 100 meters (330 feet) or so thick. NASA's Juno spacecraft carries an instrument called the Microwave Radiometer, which examines Jupiter's atmosphere beneath the planet's cloud tops. This image shows the instrument's view of the outer part of Jupiter's atmosphere. Before Juno began using this instrument, scientists expected the atmosphere to be uniform at depths greater than 60 miles (100 kilometers). But with the Microwave Radiometer, scientists have discovered that the atmosphere has variations down to at least 220 miles (350 kilometers), as deep as the instrument can see. In the cut-out image to the right, orange signifies high ammonia abundance and blue signifies low ammonia abundance. Jupiter appears to have a band around its equator high in ammonia abundance, with a column shown in orange. This is contrary to scientists' expectations that ammonia would be uniformly mixed.

This series of images from NASA's Juno spacecraft captures changing cloud formations across Jupiter's southern hemisphere. A cloud in the shape of a dolphin appears to be swimming through the cloud bands along the South South Temperate Belt. This sequence of images was taken between 2 26 p.m. and 2 46 p.m. PDT (5 26 p.m. and 5 56 p.m. EDT) on Oct. 29, 2018, as the spacecraft performed its 16th close flyby of Jupiter. At the time, Juno's altitude ranged from about 11,400 to 31,700 miles (18,400 to 51,000 kilometers) from the planet's cloud tops, at approximately 32 to 59 degrees south latitude. From on high, the Cassini spacecraft spies a group of three ring moons in their travels around Saturn. Janus is seen at top, while Pandora hugs the outer edge of the narrow F ring. More difficult to spot is Pan, which is a mere speck in this view.

The planets are shown in the correct order of distance from the Sun, the correct relative sizes, and the correct relative orbital distances. The sizes of the bodies are greatly exaggerated relative to the orbital distances. The faint rings of Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune are not shown. Eris, Haumea, and Makemake do not appear in the illustration owing to their highly tilted orbits. The dwarf planet Ceres is not shown separately; it resides in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

This image of Jupiter's turbulent southern hemisphere was captured by NASA's Juno spacecraft as it performed its most recent close flyby of the gas giant planet on Dec. 21, 2018. This new perspective captures the notable Great Red Spot, as well as a massive storm called Oval BA. The storm reached its current size when three smaller spots collided and merged in the year 2000. The Great Red Spot, which is about twice as wide as Oval BA, may have formed from the same process centuries ago. Juno captured Oval BA in another image earlier on in the mission on Feb. 7, 2018. The turbulent regions around, and even the shape of, the storm have significantly changed since then. Oval BA further transformed in recent months, changing color from reddish to a more uniform white. This image was captured by the JunoCam imager aboard NASA's Juno spacecraft on April 10, 2020, during the mission's 25th science pass of Jupiter. Oval BA, a large muddy circle of clouds near the upper-left of picture, is a storm approximately the same size as Earth. The bright storm below and to the right of Oval BA is one of Jupiter's string of pearls massive counterclockwise rotating storms that appear as white ovals in the gas giant's southern hemisphere. The original JunoCam image used to produce this view was taken from an altitude of about 400,000 miles (64,500 kilometers) above Jupiter's cloud tops. Citizen scientist Rita Najm processed the images to enhance the color and contrast. Juno's elliptical orbit around Jupiter is evolving gradually as the perijove (closest approach) point moves farther north on each pass. The easternmost edge of Jupiter's Great Red Spot and surrounding south tropical disturbance are captured in this image from NASA's Juno spacecraft. At left, wispy tendrils from the Red Spot give the atmosphere a layered appearance as they partially obscure cloud features below. Jupiter's appearance is a tapestry of vivid colors and swirling atmospheric vortices. Many aspects of the planet's atmosphere are still a mystery. For example, the origin of individual storms or churning cloud features is unknown. By studying Jupiter's weather up close for the first time, Juno is helping researchers better understand how atmospheres work in general -- including our own. What we learn about Jupiter's atmosphere will also help scientists understand how gas-giant planets work in general, including those now being discovered beyond our solar system. composite frames of the mid-section of Jupiter were of narrow angle images acquired on December 31, 2000, a day after Cassinis closest approach to the planet. The smallest features in these frames are roughly ~ 60 kilometres. The left is natural colour, composited to yield the colour that Jupiter would have if seen by the naked eye. The right frame is composed of 3 images: two were taken through narrow band filters cantered on regions of the spectrum where the gaseous methane in Jupiters atmosphere absorbs light, and the third was taken in a red continuum region of the spectrum, where Jupiter has no absorptions.

Jupiters moon Europa, is seen in a cutaway view through two cycles of its 3.5 day orbit about the giant planet Jupiter. Like Earth, Europa is thought to have an iron core, a rocky mantle and a surface ocean of salty water. Unlike on Earth, however, this ocean is deep enough to cover the whole moon, and being far from the sun, the ocean surface is globally frozen over. There is a red glow in the interior of Europas rocky mantle and in the lower, warmer part of its ice shell. This tidal heating is what keeps Europas ocean liquid and could prove critical to the survival of simple organisms within the ocean, if they exist.
