On the left is Lieutenant-Colonel C. G. Ingate, who was Lieutenant Cutler's commanding officer in the Middle East. The ceremony was unique in that Lord Gowrie is himself a V.C. winner. The Battle of Khalkhyn Gol was the decisive engagement of the undeclared Soviet-Japanese Border War fought between the Soviet Union, Mongolia and the Empire of Japan in 1939. The conflict was named after the river Khalkhyn Gol, which passes through the battlefield. In Japan, the decisive battle of the conflict is known as the Nomonhan Incident (Nomonhan Jiken) after a nearby village on the border between Mongolia and Manchuria. The battles resulted in total defeat for the Japanese Sixth Army. Casualty estimates vary widely: Some sources say the Japanese suffered 45,000 or more soldiers killed with Soviet casualties of at least 17,000. The Japanese officially reported 8,440 killed and 8,766 wounded, while the Soviets initially claimed 9,284 total casualties. Although this engagement is little known in the West, it had profound implications on the conduct of World War II. It may be said to be the first decisive battle of World War II, because it determined that the two principal Axis Pow

King of Nepal Walks Out - He Takes Refuge In Indian Embassy At Kathmandu -- A stock picture, made in 1937, of Tribhubana Bis Vikram Sah, the King of Nepal (under umbrella) during celebrations of his Silver Jubilee. He was then 31 years of age - he came to the throne in 1911.The latest reports from Nepal say that the King ('The Golden Basilisk') has fled from his palace and has taken refuge in the Indian Embassy at Kathmandu, the capital, in order to escape the shackles of the Prime Minister, who is the virtual ruler of this land of the Gurkhas. With the King went the Crown Prince, aged 30, and the Princess eldest son. Now the Parliament have enthroned the Crown Prince's second son, four-years-old Dhiraja Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Deva - so ending the 39 years reign of his 44-years-old grandfather. April 30, 1937.

He led the United Nations Command in the Korean War until he was removed from command by President Harry S. Truman on 11 April 1951. Syngman Rhee was a Korean statesman, authoritarian dictator, and the first president of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea as well as the first president of South Korea.

Royal Air Force Fighter Command, 1939-1945. Flight Lieutenants P W Townsend (left) and C B Hull of No. 43 Squadron RAF at Wick, Caithness, at the time they had shot down three enemy aircraft each. Hull became the commanding officer of the Squadron in September 1940 and was killed in action on 7 September having shot down at least 10 enemy aircraft. Townsend was to end his flying service with at least 11 victories, having commanded Nos. 85 and 605 Squadrons RAF. He then commanded RAF stations at Drem and West Malling, and No. 23 Initial Training Wing, before becoming Equerry of Honour to the King in March 1944.
