S77-28212 (13 Sept 1977) --- Astronauts Joe H. Engle (right), commander, and Richard H. Truly, pilot, sit in the cockpit of the shuttle Orbiter 101 "Enterprise" at the Dryden Flight Research Center (DFRC) prior to takeoff of the NASA 747 carrier aircraft to which the "Enterprise" was mated. The pair later made a five-minute, 31-second free-flight in the craft, the second in a series of such flights for the Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests (ALT) program. The photograph was made from the Mate-Demate Device (MDD).

The "Brabazon's" Land Trails -- The gleaming surface of the rear assembly of the Brabazon before her trails today. The 130-ton Bristol Brabazon, the world's biggest landplane, moved under its own power for the first time today. Piloted by Mr. A. J. Pegg, Bristol Aeroplane Company's chief test pilot, the huge machine was given five separate taxi-ing tests, up and down the 3,000 yards specially built runway at Filton, Bristol. Highest speed attained during the tests was 76 m.p.h. September 3, 1949

Fairey Gyrodyne 3-Blade Helicopter (Alvis Leonides 500 H.P. Radial Engine) -- The variable pitch propeller on the right stub wing counteracts torque and gives forward thrust. First stage of a range of constructor's experimental trial flights has now been successfully concluded, with the Fairey Gyrodyne Helicopter, first of its kind in the world.The Gyrodyne made its first airborne "hop" on 7th December, 1947, and since then stage by stage progress has been continual and successful. Since the Gyrodyne embodies entirely new ideas in rotating wing flight and different controls from any other helicopter the experimental test pilot, Squadron Leader Basil Arkell, has had the unique distinction of being at once his own chief instructor arid new pupil part of his work consisted in the compilation of a Piloting Manual whilst he was familiarising himself with the controls in flight. Vertol VZ-2 (Model 76): Arriving at Langley from Edwards Air Force Base, California, this Vertol VZ-2 underwent almost a year and a half of flight research before going back to the manufacturer for rework. The VZ-2 was used to investigate Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL).

Aviation in Britain Before the First World War Cody aircraft mark V undergoing a strength test in the shed by being hung upside down and having small bags of sand on the lower wing and what appear to be shot bags on the upper wing. Note the rudders have been folded back so they are at the wingtips. With the help of his family and friends Cody built the mark V mainly from the remains of the mark III in just four weeks, after both the aircraft that he intended to enter in the trials were written off. It was powered by the 120 hp Austro-Daimler engine which was relatively unscathed from the crashes it had been in. Note the triangular rudders similar to those on the monoplane. It was with this machine that Cody won both the International Division and the British Division (GBP5000 prize in total) of the 1912 military trials, a competition to find an aircraft for the army. 32 machines were entered from 21 companies in a series of tests. Gas Turbine Powers Helicopter -- The U.S. Navy announced today the first successful flight by a gas turbine shaft powered helicopter. William R. Murray of Wilton, Conn., a former Navy pilot is shown at teh controls of the experimental K-225 as it hovers over Bradley Field, Windsor Locks, Conn., during a test flight. The X-2, initially an Air Force program, was scheduled to be transferred to the civilian National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) for scientific research. The Air Force delayed turning the aircraft over to the NACA in the hope of attaining Mach 3 in the airplane. The service requested and received a two-month extension to qualify another Air Force test pilot, Capt. Miburn "Mel" Apt, in the X-2 and attempt to exceed Mach 3.After several ground briefings in the simulator, Apt (with no previous rocket plane experience) made his flight on 27 September 1956. Apt raced away from the B-50 under full power, quickly outdistancing the F-100 chase planes. At high altitude, he nosed over, accelerating rapidly. The X-2 reached Mach 3.2 (2,094 mph) at 65,000 feet. Apt became the first man to fly more than three times the speed of sound.Still above Mach 3, he began an abrupt turn back to Edwards.
