Two left sides. At left: the support is a siren with a tail forming a circle below the center of the frame, with the representation of three figures in the inside. One scroll downards. The frame is supported by the shoulder, the top by the head. At right chimerae with the busts of women with butterfly wings and raised arms are the supports. Below they are connected by a wreath. Below the frame is a calyx or a shell from which festoons hang towards the legs, and a trophy of a pan flute and a clarinette hang in the center. Frame and top-like cornices of an entablature. Usual background. Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash on off-white laid paper, lined. Date: ca. 1785-1790. Museum: Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Sketchbook John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). Sketchbook, 1871-1872. Graphite, charcoal, watercolor and white chalk on paper, Sketchbook: 9 3/16 x 11 7/8 x 1/2 in. (23.3 x 30.2 x 1.3 cm). Regarded as one of the leading portraitists and watercolorists of the Gilded Age, the expatriate John Singer Sargent was also a consummate draftsman. He drew prolifically and precociously from a young age, as evidenced by this sketchbook, which he used while traveling in Germany in 1871-72, at age fifteen. Sargent filled many of the pages with his exercises in copying classical statuary from the famous plaster cast collection of Dresdens Albertinum museum. The sketches show a variety of approaches, from broad, linear strokes to refined tonal modeling. American Art 1871-1872
