Limestone male head last quarter of the 6th century B.C. Cypriot This carefully executed head is of greatest interest for the headgear. The familiar helmetlike cap has on it the body of a bird. The animal's head is just above the man's forehead, the wings extend to either side, and the tail ends just before the projection at the top of the cap. In ancient Greece and Cyprus, the integration of whole animals or expressive parts into dress or armor was a frequent occurrence. Herakles with the lionskin is perhaps the foremost example. The priest, 74.51.2466, has a bull's head at the top of the cap. One wonders whether the individual depicted here was mortal or whether, conceivably, he might represent a special variant of Hermes, the messenger god whose travels were expedited by his winged shoes and cap.. Date: ca. 8th-7th century B.C..This carved head of a male figure was found with several other ivory heads in the Throne Room of the Burnt Palace at Nimrud, including that of a female figure also in the Metropolitan Museum's collection (MMA 54.117.8). It was probably blackened through exposure to fire when the palace complexes at Nimrud were sacked during the final defeat of Assyria at the end of the seventh century B.C. Originally, this piece may have been part of a composite statuette made of various materials and overlaid with gold foil. The man's long hair, parted at the center, falls in thick braids and is wrapped by a thin, double fillet. His small mouth and large eyes, which are drilled to receive inlays in colored glass or semiprecious stones, resemble those frequently found on North Syrian ivories. Senenmut and Princess Neferoure. Senenmut (Senmut, Senemut) was an 18th dynasty, ancient Egyptian architect and government official. After Hatshepsut was crowned pharaoh, Senenmut became high steward of the king. Senenmut supervised the quarrying, transport, and erection of twin obelisks, at the time the tallest in the world, at the entrance to the Temple of Karnak. Senenmut was chief architect of Hatshepsut's works at Deir el-Bahri. Neferure (or Neferura) was an Egyptian princess of the eighteenth dynasty. Head of Vaitunkta Vishnu ca. 6th century Northern Pakistan (Brahmanical post-Gupta) Head of Vaitunkta Vishnu, seemingly dates later, but in reality may be close in date to the Head of Shiva. It is arguably one of the earliest renderings of a new Vishnu iconographic type, the three-headed Vaikuntha Vishnu in which the anthropomorphic Vishnu has the faces of the boar (Varaha) and lion (Narasimha) manifestations (avatars) emanating left and right. Here the boar is intact, the lion largely missing, but both emerge from the shoulders, not from the side of Vishnus head as seen in later Kashmirs classic versions. This feature, seen also in the earliest dated version of this subject known—a late 5th century bronze from northern Pakistan—and a 6th century version now in the Museum of Indian Art, Berlin, points to our stone version dating from this first known phase of the iconographic-types appearance. Chamunda, the Horrific Destroyer of Evil 10th-11th century India This is a fragment of a full-length sculpture portraying the ferocious Hindu goddess Kali in the form of Chamunda, an epithet derived from her act of decapitating the demons Chanda and Munda. Chamunda embodies bareness and decay. Her hair is piled up into a chignon decorated with a tiara of skulls and a crescent moon. She scowls, baring her teeth, and enormous eyeballs protrude menacingly from sunken sockets in her skeletal face. As a necklace, she wears a snake whose coils echo the rings of decaying flesh that sag beneath her collarbone. Just above her navel on her emaciated torso is a scorpion, a symbol of sickness and death. She presumably once held lethal objects in the hands of her twelve missing arms.Chamunda is naked except for a short diaphanous dhoti partially covering the two tiger skins complete with heads that hang from her waist to her knees.
