The British liner Athenia, 13,465 tons (top right), was torpedoed and sunk yesterday 250 miles west of Inishtrahull Island, off the northern Irish coast, while on her way from Liverpool to Montreal, Canada. She carried 1,400 persons, of whom 314 were citizens of the United States. It is reported that all on board, excepting those killed by the explosion, have been picked up.
