Madonna del cardellino or Madonna of the Goldfinch. c. 1505-1506; oil painting on wood. By the Italian High Renaissance artist (Raphael), Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520). The Madonna del cardellino shows three figures; Mary, Christ and the young John the Baptist. Though the positions of the three bodies are natural, together they form an almost regular triangle. The Madonna was a wedding gift from Raphael to his friend Lorenzo Nasi. In Madonna Del Cardellino, the goldfinch represents Christs crucifixion.

The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist. Artist: Perino del Vaga (Pietro Buonaccorsi) (Italian, Florence 1501-1547 Rome). Dimensions: 34 3/4 x 25 5/8 in. (88.3 x 65.1 cm). Date: ca. 1524-26.Florentine by birth, Perino was trained in Raphael's workshop in Rome, where he soon became one of the most inventive artists of his generation. This is a rare devotional painting by him. It includes traditional symbols such as the goldfinch (symbolic of the Resurrection), but also more unusual details, especially a young Saint John who is crowned with grape leaves and wears a leopard skin, usually associated with the god Bacchus--a mingling of pagan and Christian iconography. The exquisite depiction of the infant Christ shows the care with which Perino approached this panel. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

This early Madonna is unusual in Sanos prolific career in that it shows not only the graceful linear forms that characterize Sienese painting, but also the powerful effect of Florentine realism in the pliant muscularity of the Child and the sense of observed reality in the head of the Madonna. The Madonna of Humility refers to images of the Virgin seated modestly on the ground (usually, as here, on a cushion), emphasizing her humanity and motherhood, as opposed to the Madonna Enthroned, which presents her as the Queen of Heaven. As was common in other images of this genre, this Madonna is surrounded by cherubim, junior members of the family of angels and often depicted as winged heads. Certain details, however, subtly foreshadow Christs sacrifice: Marys red dress and cloak signal the color of Christs Passion, and her right hand, which is gripping the cloth taut beneath the Child, recalls the actions of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, who supported the weight of the dead Christ on a white burial shroud after the Deposition from the cross.
