This colorized negative-stained transmission electron micrograph (TEM) depicts the ultrastructural details of a number of influenza virus particles, or virions. A member of the taxonomic family Orthomyxoviridae, the influenza virus is a single-stranded RNA organism. The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent this illness is by getting a flu vaccination each fall.

Incubation lasts for 1-5wks. Sickness begins with fever and muscle aches, followed by shortness of breath and coughing.

This thin-section transmission electron micrograph (TEM) depicted the ultrastructural details of a number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) virus particles, or virions. A member of the genus Lentivirus, HIV is separated into two serotypes, HIV-1 and HIV-2, and is the cause for the disease known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS. This virus may be passed from one person to another when infected blood, semen, or vaginal secretions come in contact with an uninfected person's broken skin or mucous membranes*. In addition, infected pregnant women can pass HIV to their baby during pregnancy or delivery, as well as through breast-feeding. People with HIV have what is called HIV infection. Some of these people will develop AIDS as a result of their HIV infection.

In a series of experiments, scientists reactivated resting immune cells that were latently infected with HIV or its monkey relative, SIV, in blood cells and a variety of tissues in animals. As a result, the cells started making copies of the viruses, which could be neutralized by anti-HIV drugs and the immune system. This breakthrough, published in January 2020 in two articles in the journal Nature, marks progress towards widely accessible treatment for HIV.

This transmission electron micrograph from a pelleted specimen depicts three icosahedral-shaped herpes virus virions. The staining technique used to process this specimen revealed the following findings: virions with a dark center, where the stain has penetrated, indicates a capsid with no DNA, while a virion with a light center, where there is no stain penetration, indicates a nucleocapsid , ie capsid plus its DNA core.

1981 Dr. Erskine Palmer This transmission electron micrograph (TEM) revealed the presence of hepatitis B virions. The large round virions are known as Dane particles. Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. Toxins, certain drugs, some diseases, heavy alcohol use, and bacterial and viral infections can all cause hepatitis. Hepatitis is also the name of a family of viral infections that affect the liver the most common types are hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.

This transmission electron micrograph (TEM) revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology displayed by norovirus virions, or virus particles. Noroviruses belong to the genus Norovirus, and the family Caliciviridae. They are a group of related, single-stranded RNA, nonenveloped viruses that cause acute gastroenteritis in humans. Norovirus was recently approved as the official genus name for the group of viruses provisionally described as Norwalk-like viruses (NLV).

Meningococcus or Neisseria meningitidis, is a bacterium that can cause meningitis. The bacteria are germs that can be found in the rhinopharynx, where it can cause benign rhinopharyngitis or an asymptomatic state. Influenza virus. Influenza A virus causes flu in humans, swine, birds, horses and dogs. Which species the virus will infect is determined by the glycoprotein spikes on its outer envelope.
