Vegetable Dolls Are Artistic Oddity -- Miss Carrie Brauer, a gifted New York artist, makes funny dolls from all kinds of vegetables. She finds that their odd shapes and various colors make vegetables an especially suitable material.A vegetable doll in the making. Chocolate Layer Cake: 5oz shortening, 8oz sugar, 3 eggs, ½ cup milk, 8oz self-raising flour, vanilla, chocolate icing, walnut halves.Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Sift the flour and add alternately with the milk and vanilla to the creamed ingredients. Bake in two well-greased 7in sandwich tins in a moderate oven, temp. 350 deg. F. gas, 425 deg. F. electric, from 30 to 35 minutes. When cool, join together with a little chocolate icing and spread remainder over the top and sides. Decorate with walnut halves.For the chocolate icing sift 10oz icing sugar and 1½ tablespoons cocoa together. Beat 3 tablespoons shortening until soft, add the icing sugar and cocoa, and 3 tablespoons sherry.Little Apple Cakes: 2oz shortening, 2oz sugar, 1 egg, 3 tablespoons milk, 4oz self-raising flour, 1 large grated apple, 1 teaspoon lemon rind, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, pale pink warm icing, cinnamon.Mix together the grated apple, lemon rind and juice. Cream shortening and sugar

Australia At War: Girls emptying trays just out of dehydrator.Australian factories are now engaged on large scale dehydration of vegetables for Allied forces in the S.W. Pacific. A 1 quality carrots, cabbages, potatoes, onions, parsnips, swedes, parsley and beetroot are being dehydrated. Time involved varies from 7 to 9 hours for processing of different vegetables. One 15 lb. drum of dehydrated carrots equals 165 lbs. of fresh carrots. Unopened they will keep indefinitely. It lessens transport problems, assures delivery in good condition and is invaluable to the health of fighting men. This series of pictures deals solely with carrot dehydration. May 09, 1943.
