Carpet Fragment 14th-15th century This irregular-shaped fragment is decorated with rows of hook motifs and stylized leaves in dark blue, green, and yellow on a red ground. This design once was repeated on a larger surface to fill the main field of an Anatolian carpet. The geometric aspect of the composition relates this fragment to the earlier period (13th-14th centuries; Seljuq and Beyliq periods) of which only few examples survive. The interlocking hocked motifs, however, - probably stylized vine scrolls - connect it with later carpets (for example, the famous Lotto carpets from the sixteenth-seventeenth centuries), that were woven in western Anatolia under the Ottomans.. Goldfish, Mulberry paper (kozo washi) treated with fermented persimmon tannin (kakishibu),, Scattered around the stencil are tiny goldfish. Punching and carving methods have both been applied to create the whimsical image. Dispersed throughout the design are tiny floral blossoms that mimic the details of the fish. The top edge appears to be a bit battered in places while there are splotches of some light brown material. It is possible to trace the long popularity of this ancient iconography thanks to the large surviving numbers of similar silks in various colors and quality of weave.
