Date: 18th century.Vellum is delicately knife-cut to emulate fine lace in this Devotional, also known as Canivet. This is a religious precursor of the Valentine, which would have been given as a gift to honor a special occasion, such as birth, death, communion, or marriage.The cut paper is a background for the central, painted image, which shows crossed swords impaling a flaming heart -- which is amid clouds. Another flaming heart appears to grow from the earth with two roses. An inscribed banner, consecrating a life to God and Mary, adds a prayer to the composition. An allover pattern of tiny, interlocking dots gives the panel the appearance of a cross-stitched embroidery. Variants of this pattern, depicting slightly different plant forms or animals illustrate that these textiles were mass-produced.
