Violin ca. 1752-1800 Attributed to Johann Anton Gedler German This unusual violin is one of a group of instruments made by Füssen violin builders that has a scalloped outline. The shape is somewhat reminiscenet of other stringed-instruments, such as viola da gambas and violas d'amore, that have festooned bodies. However, the effect with this instrument is like water rippling. It has been suggested such instruments were made for theatrical performances that required onstage instruments. Violin Horn French ca. 1800-1899 This unusual instrument is both a horn and a violin. The instrument is in the shape of a fully-functioning standard violin, while tubes of conical brass tubing are concealed inside. A mouthpiece receiver extends from the back of the scroll the rib below the tailpiece is open for the horn "bell." This instrument is a reproduction of an instrument housed in the Museum Carolino Augusteum, Salzburg. Technical description: Unusual violin form fitted with soundpost and bar, but having many folds of slightly conical brass tubing concealed within the body. The upper end of the tube passes through the neck and issues at the back of the scroll, wgere a mouthpiece is inserted. The other end of the tube widens within the body into a flattened rectangular bell, which takes the place of the usual block at the bottom of the violin. Four pegs, tipped with ivory, and four strings which pass over the bridge and are attached. View more. Violin Horn. French. ca. 1800-1899.

The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Belly W. at the neck 5.2 cm (2.05 in.). Former Attribution: John Rose (English, active 1552-61). Date: ca. 1600.Most surviving viols signed by or attributed to John Rose were likely made by the younger of a father and son pair of luthiers who went by the same name, and who worked in Bridewell, London, in the sixteenth century. While John Rose senior was among the earliest known of English viol makers, his son was among the most celebrated, and regarded as "the finest of all viol makers" in Thomas Mace's Musick's Monument of 1676. This instrument, dated ca. 1600, is attributed to the younger John Rose.
