Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence ca. 1180 British Contrary to iconographic convention, Saint Lawrence here appears in supplication, amid bands of fire, rather than stretched out on the grill. This representation reflects the writings of both saints Augustine and Ambrose, which relate that Lawrence conquered the fire withoutshown here licking at his feetwith the three fires within: those inflamed by the ardor of faith, the love of Christ, and the true knowledge of God, which are represented here by the bands of fire at waist and shoulder level and by the column of fire above his head.The attribution of the panel to Canterbury is based largely on style; its precise location in the cathedral choir has not been determined. The bearded head is not that of Saint Lawrence but came from elsewhere in the same glazing program and was later inserted, probably in the nineteenth century; most of the inscription and much of the architectural framings are recent restorations to complete the panel.. Here, the Cologne glass painters adapted color to the traditional fondness for white glass, so that large areas of saturated color are combined with equally large sections of grisaille. At the right is Saint Mary Magdalene holding her attribute, the alabaster jar containing the ointment with which she anointed the body of Jesus. The inscription reads: M[ARIA SOROR MARTH[HAE (Mary, sister of Martha). Grisaille windows with figural glass in the central zones, known as band windows, were common in French glazing programs of the fourteenth century. Stained Glass Panel with Emperor Henry II 1340-50 Austrian The church of Saint Leonhard was constructed in the early decades of the fourteenth century, with some of its choir and chapel windows in place by 1350. The program of the choir windows included scenes from the life of Christ as well as images of the Twelve Apostles and locally venerated saints. Seventeen panels from six different windows at Saint Leonhard are now installed in three lancet windows in the Gothic Chapel at The Cloisters. The center window contains narrative scenes, while more static, iconic images occupy the two flanking windows. Some of the figures are framed within so-called keyhole medallions: polylobed variations on the traditional circles used as framing devices in France a century earlier. The background is composed largely of foliate motifs and schematic architectural members, providing a colorful, intricate contrast to the heavyset figures often admired for their simple, childlike features.Standing at the
