STS051-15-035 (19 Sept 1993) --- Backdropped against black space and the blue and white Earth, the Orbiting Retrievable Far and Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer (ORFEUS) and its Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS) are pictured during berthing in Discovery's cargo bay. The free-flying craft had spent several days orbiting at a distance from Discovery with several experiments in operation. Here, the satellite is still in the grasp of the Canadian-built Remote Manipulator System (RMS), which was used also for the earlier deployment.

ISS015-E-12878 (15 June 2007) --- Astronaut Jim Reilly, STS-117 mission specialist, enters the Quest Airlock on the International Space Station at the conclusion of the mission's third scheduled session of extravehicular activity (EVA) while Space Shuttle Atlantis was docked with the station.

ISS023-E-022222 (13 April 2010) --- Dwarfed by components of the International Space Station, NASA astronaut Rick Mastracchio (bottom center), STS-131 mission specialist, is seen working near the Quest airlock during the mission's third and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the orbital complex. During the six-hour, 24-minute spacewalk, Mastracchio and astronaut Clayton Anderson (out of frame), mission specialist, hooked up fluid lines of the new 1,700-pound tank, retrieved some micrometeoroid shields from the Quest airlocks exterior, relocated a portable foot restraint and prepared cables on the Zenith 1 truss for a spare Space to Ground Ku-Band antenna, two chores required before space shuttle Atlantis' STS-132/ULF-4 mission in May. Also featured in the image are a docked Russian Soyuz spacecraft and space shuttle Discovery.

ISS022-E-067182 (17 Feb. 2010) --- NASA astronaut Robert Behnken, STS-130 mission specialist, participates in the missions third and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the five-hour, 48-minute spacewalk, Behnken and Nicholas Patrick (out of frame), mission specialist, completed all of their planned tasks, removing insulation blankets and removing launch restraint bolts from each of the Cupolas seven windows.

ISS018-E-040973 (18 March 2009) --- This scene gives evidence that the "work crews" have arrived at the International Space Station to continue the "home improvement" project. A Soyuz vehicle used to transport the station crewmembers is in the foreground, with the Space Shuttle Discovery visible just beneath it. Ten people are busy on the station, and two of them are preparing to exit the shirt sleeve environment to go outside for a March 19 spacewalk, on which the other crewmembers will be pitching in their support and technical assistance.

STS111-310-014 (9 June 2002) --- Backdropped by the blackness of space, the Space Shuttle Endeavour is pictured while docked to the Pressurized Mating Adapter (PMA-2) at the forward end of the Destiny laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS). A portion of the Canadarm2 is visible on the right and Endeavours robotic arm is in full view as it is stretched out with the S0 (S-zero) Truss at its end.

S132-E-008866 (21 May 2010) --- NASA astronauts Michael Good and Garrett Reisman (partially obscured), both STS-132 mission specialists, participate in the missions third and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 46-minute spacewalk, Good and Reisman completed the installation of the final two of the six new batteries for the B side of the port 6 solar array. In addition, the astronauts installed a backup ammonia jumper cable between the port 4 and 5 trusses of the station, transferred a Power and Data Grapple Fixture from the shuttle to the station, and reconfigured some tools.

S125-E-007744 (15 May 2009) --- While standing on the end of Atlantis' remote manipulator system arm, astronaut Michael Good, STS-125 mission specialist, works on the Hubble Space Telescope. Astronauts Good and Mike Massimino (out of frame), mission specialist, continue work on the Hubble Space Telescope, locked down in the orbiter's cargo bay. After their May 15 tasks were completed, three more sessions of extravehicular activity, on back to back to back days, awaited the seven-person crew.

S128-E-007203 (1 Sept. 2009) --- Astronauts John Danny” Olivas and Nicole Stott (right), both STS-128 mission specialists, participate in the mission's first session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 35-minute spacewalk, Olivas and Stott removed an empty ammonia tank from the station’s truss and temporarily stowed it on the station’s robotic arm. Olivas and Stott also retrieved the European Technology Exposure Facility (EuTEF) and Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE) from the Columbus laboratory module and installed them on Discovery’s payload bay for return.

S124-E-007254 (8 June 2008) --- Astronauts Mike Fossum (bottom) and Ron Garan, both STS-124 mission specialists, participate in the mission's third scheduled session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 33-minute spacewalk, Fossum and Garan exchanged a depleted Nitrogen Tank Assembly for a new one, removed thermal covers and launch locks from the Kibo laboratory, reinstalled a repaired television camera onto the space station's left P1 truss, and retrieved samples of a dust-like substance from the left Solar Alpha Rotary Joint for analysis by experts on the ground.

S120-E-007100 (28 Oct. 2007) --- Astronaut Daniel Tani, Expedition 16 flight engineer, participates in the second of five scheduled sessions of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction continues on the International Space Station. During the 6-hour, 33-minute spacewalk Tani and astronaut Scott Parazynski (out of frame), STS-120 mission specialist, worked in tandem to disconnect cables from the P6 truss, allowing it to be removed from the Z1 truss. Tani also visually inspected the station's starboard Solar Alpha Rotary Joint (SARJ) and gathered samples of "shavings" he found under the joint's multi-layer insulation covers. Also the spacewalkers outfitted the Harmony module, mated the power and data grapple fixture and reconfigured connectors on the starboard 1 (S1) truss that will allow the radiator on S1 to be deployed from the ground later.

ISS022-E-066406 (16 Feb. 2010) --- In the grasp of the Canadarm2, the Pressurized Mating Adapter 3 (PMA-3) is relocated from the Harmony node to the open port on the end of the newly-installed Tranquility node. NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Nicholas Patrick, both STS-130 mission specialists, operated the stations robotic arm for the move, while Jeffrey Williams, Expedition 22 commander; and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Soichi Noguchi, Expedition 22 flight engineer, dealt with latches and bolts, connecting the port to its new home. S125-E-009612 (18 May 2009) --- Astronaut John Grunsfeld, STS-125 mission specialist, positioned on a foot restraint on the end of Atlantis remote manipulator system (RMS), participates in the missions fifth and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as work continues to refurbish and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope. During the seven-hour and two-minute spacewalk, Grunsfeld and astronaut Andrew Feustel (out of frame), mission specialist, installed a battery group replacement, removed and replaced a Fine Guidance Sensor and three thermal blankets (NOBL) protecting Hubbles electronics.

iss060e043181 (Aug. 21, 2019) --- NASA astronaut Andrew Morgan is pictured working outside the International Space Station during a six-hour and 32-minute spacewalk to install the orbiting labs second commercial crew vehicle docking port, the International Docking Adapter-3 (IDA-3). The IDA-3 will accommodate the future arrivals of Boeing CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX Crew Dragon commercial crew spacecraft.

STS114-323-001 (30 July 2005) --- A blanket of heavy cloud cover forms the backdrop for this image featuring the Italian-built Raffaello Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM) and portions of the Canadarm2 and the Destiny laboratory of the International Space Station. The image was photographed by an STS-114 crewmember during the mission;s first session of extravehicular activity (EVA).

The Kibo laboratory module is comprised of several components including the Pressurized Module where station crew members conduct science experiments, the Logistics module (pictured here) where science gear and research samples are stored, and the Exposed Facility where external experiments can deployed to understand the harsh effects of the space environment. Also pictured are portions of two robotic arms including Japan's robotic manipulator system (left) that can maneuver external experiments and deploy nanosateliites, and the Canadarm2 robotic arm that can capture, install, and release cargo craft, as well as maneuver spacewalkers and International Space Station hardware.

During the six-hour, 27-minute spacewalk, Arnold and Acaba helped robotic arm operators relocate the Crew Equipment Translation Aid (CETA) cart from the Port 1 to Starboard 1 truss segment, installed a new coupler on the CETA cart, lubricated snares on the "B" end of the space station's robotic arm and performed a few "get ahead" tasks.

ISS023-E-021535 (11 April 2010) --- NASA astronaut Rick Mastracchio, STS-131 mission specialist, participates in the mission's second session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the seven-hour, 26-minute spacewalk, Mastracchio and astronaut Clayton Anderson (out of frame), mission specialist, unhooked and removed the depleted ammonia tank and installed a 1,700-pound ammonia tank on the stations Starboard 1 truss, completing the second of a three-spacewalk coolant tank replacement process.

During the six-hour, 45-minute spacewalk, among other tasks, Walheim and Schlegel worked to replace a nitrogen tank used to pressurize the station's ammonia cooling system.

ISS013-E-63434 (3 Aug. 2006) --- Astronaut Thomas Reiter, who represents the European Space Agency on the Expedition 13 crew, is seen with the reinforced carbon carbon (RCC) sample case which was one of the final major planned tasks for a 5-hour, 54-minute spacewalk that he shared with astronaut Jeffrey N. Williams (out of frame), flight engineer and NASA ISS science officer.

ISS028-E-017801 (18 July 2011) --- This view of the space shuttle Atlantis while still docked with the International Space Station was taken by a crew member aboard the station on the final day of joint activities between the crew members for the STS-135 and Expedition 28 missions. The robotic arm on the shuttle appears to be saluting "good-bye" to the station. Earth's airglow is seen as a thin blue line above the horizon. The Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module, full of items to be returned to Earth, is seen in the aft cargo bay.

Fellow cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev (out of frame) joined Prokopyev during the spacewalk which also saw the installation of the Icarus animal-tracking experiment and the retrieval of a materials exposure experiment on the Russian segment of the International Space Station.

ISS026-E-024409 (3 Feb. 2011) --- While attached on the end of the Canadarm2, Dextre, the Canadian Space Agencys robotic “handyman”, is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 26 crew member aboard the International Space Station. During the activities, Dextre unpacked two critical pieces of equipment delivered by Japans Kounotori2 spacecraft.

S133-E-007457 (28 Feb. 2011) --- NASA astronauts Alvin Drew and Steve Bowen, both STS-133 mission specialists, participate in the missions first session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 34-minute spacewalk, Drew and Bowen installed the J612 power extension cable, move a failed ammonia pump module to the External Stowage Platform 2 on the Quest Airlock for return to Earth at a later date, installed a camera wedge on the right hand truss segment, installed extensions to the mobile transporter rail and exposed the Japanese Message in a Bottle experiment to space.

ISS006-E-46357 (8 April 2003) --- Astronaut Kenneth D. Bowersox, Expedition Six mission commander, emerges from the Quest airlock on the International Space Station (ISS) to begin a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) to perform a variety of maintenance tasks. Astronaut Donald R. Pettit (out of frame), NASA ISS science officer, joined Bowersox on the spacewalk.

S130-E-008226 (15 Feb. 2010) --- In the grasp of the Canadarm2, the Cupola is relocated from the forward port to the Earth-facing port of the International Space Stations newly-installed Tranquility node. NASA astronauts Terry Virts, STS-130 pilot; and Kathryn Hire, mission specialist, moved the Cupola, operating the stations robotic arm from controls inside the Destiny laboratory.

ISS014-E-10054 (18 Dec. 2006) --- Backdropped by a blue and white Earth, a portion of the port overhead solar array wing on the International Space Station's P6 truss is visible at left in this image photographed by a STS-116 crewmember during the mission's fourth session of extravehicular activity (EVA). The Progress 23 resupply vehicle docked to the Zvezda Service Module's aft port is at center. Astronaut Robert L. Curbeam Jr. (out of frame) and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Christer Fuglesang (out of frame), both mission specialists, using specially prepared, tape-insulated tools, guided the array wing neatly inside its blanket box during the 6-hour, 38-minute spacewalk.

He was joined by NASA astronaut Rick Mastracchio while four crewmates representing Roscosmos and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency remained inside the orbital outpost.

. iss068e017665 (Oct. 20, 2022) --- The International Space Station's third and newest robotic manipulator, the European robotic arm (ERA), is pictured attached to the Nauka multipurpose laboratory module. The ERA provides additional payload support and spacewalk assistance on the orbiting lab's Russian segment.

S126-E-008342 (20 Nov. 2008) --- Astronauts Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper (left) and Shane Kimbrough, both STS-126 mission specialists, participate in the mission's second scheduled session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 45-minute spacewalk, Piper and Kimbrough continued the process of removing debris and applying lubrication around the starboard Solar Alpha Rotary Joint (SARJ), replaced four more of the SARJ's 12 trundle bearing assemblies, relocated two equipment carts and applied lubrication to the station's robotic Canadarm2.

Astronauts Fincke and Andrew Feustel (out of frame), both mission specialists, coordinated their shared activity with NASA astronaut Greg Chamitoff (out of frame), who stayed in communication with the pair and with Mission Control Center in Houston from the shirt sleeve environment inside the ISS.

ISS020-E-041289 (17 Sept. 2009) --- Backdropped by Earths horizon and the blackness of space, the unpiloted Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) approaches the International Space Station. Once the HTV was in range, NASA astronaut Nicole Stott, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Robert Thirsk and European Space Agency astronaut Frank De Winne, all Expedition 20 flight engineers, used the stations robotic arm to grab the cargo craft and attach it to the Earth-facing port of the Harmony node. The attachment was completed at 5:26 (CDT) on Sept. 17, 2009. The Japanese Kibo complex (top right) and the Canadarm2 (bottom right) are also visible in the image.

ISS033-E-017915 (1 Nov. 2012) --- NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, Expedition 33 commander, participates in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) outside the International Space Station on Nov. 1, 2012. During the six-hour, 38-minute spacewalk, Williams and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Aki Hoshide (out of frame), flight engineer, ventured outside the orbital outpost to perform work and to support ground-based troubleshooting of an ammonia leak.

ISS030-E-080014 (16 Feb. 2012) --- Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, Expedition 30 flight engineer, participates in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) to continue outfitting the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 15-minute spacewalk, Kononenko and Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov (out of frame), flight engineer, moved the Strela-1 crane from the Pirs Docking Compartment to begin preparing the Pirs for its replacement next year with a new laboratory and docking module. The duo used another boom, the Strela-2, to move the hand-operated crane to the Poisk module for future assembly and maintenance work. Both telescoping booms extend like fishing rods and are used to move massive components outside the station. On the exterior of the Poisk Mini-Research Module 2 (MRM2), they also installed the Vinoslivost Materials Sample Experiment, which will investigate the influence of space on the mechanical properties of the materials. iss061e005307 (Oct. 11, 2019) --- NASA astronaut Christina Koch works while tethered near the Port 6 truss segment of the International Space Station to replace older hydrogen-nickel batteries with newer, more powerful lithium-ion batteries. Fellow NASA astronaut Andrew Morgan (out of frame) assisted Morgan during the six-hour and 45-minute spacewalk.

ISS032-E-025249 (5 Sept. 2012) --- A fisheye lens attached to an electronic still camera was used to capture this image of NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, Expedition 32 flight engineer, during the missions third session of extravehicular activity (EVA). During the six-hour, 28-minute spacewalk, Williams and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Aki Hoshide (out of frame), flight engineer, completed the installation of a Main Bus Switching Unit (MBSU) that was hampered last week by a possible misalignment and damaged threads where a bolt must be placed. They also installed a camera on the International Space Stations robotic arm, Canadarm2. A portion of the space station, Earths horizon and the blackness of space provide the backdrop for the scene.

ISS032-E-021078 (20 Aug. 2012) --- Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, Expedition 32 commander, uses a still camera during a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) to continue outfitting the International Space Station. During the five-hour, 51-minute spacewalk, Padalka and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko (out of frame), flight engineer, moved the Strela-2 cargo boom from the Pirs docking compartment to the Zarya module to prepare Pirs for its eventual replacement with a new Russian multipurpose laboratory module. The two spacewalking cosmonauts also installed micrometeoroid debris shields on the exterior of the Zvezda service module and deployed a small science satellite.

ISS013-E-29003 (1 June 2006) --- The Progress 20 supply vehicle, docked to the Pirs Docking Compartment of the International Space Station, is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 13 crewmember during todays spacewalk. Progress 20 will remain docked until mid-June. It will be used to stow trash, and its supply of oxygen will help replenish the stations atmosphere. A blue and white Earth and the blackness of space provided the backdrop for this image.

Olivas and Stott also retrieved the European Technology Exposure Facility (EuTEF) and Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE) from the Columbus laboratory module and installed them on Discoverys payload bay for return.

STS109-E-5378 (6 March 2002) --- Astronaut John M. Grunsfeld, payload commander, works in tandem with astronaut Richard M. Linnehan, mission specialist, as the two devote their attention to the Power Control Unit replacement task on the giant Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Grunsfeld stands on a foot restraint on the end of the Space Shuttle Columbia's Remote Manipulator System (RMS). ISS033-E-011170 (10 Oct. 2012) --- The SpaceX Dragon commercial cargo craft is berthed to the Earth-facing side of the International Space Station's Harmony node. Working from the robotics workstation inside the seven-windowed Cupola, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Aki Hoshide, Expedition 33 flight engineer, with the assistance of NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, commander, captured Dragon at 6:56 a.m. (EDT) and used the Canadarm2 robotic arm to berth Dragon to Harmony Oct. 10, 2012. Dragon is scheduled to spend 18 days attached to the station. During that time, the crew will unload 882 pounds of crew supplies, science research and hardware from the cargo craft and reload it with 1,673 pounds of cargo for return to Earth. After Dragons mission at the station is completed, the crew will use Canadarm2 to detach Dragon from Harmony and release it for a splashdown about six hours later in the Pacific Ocean, 250 miles off the coast of southern California.
