Lazio Latina Gaeta Museo Diocesano5. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Jonas Platt Samuel Finley Breese Morse (American, 1791-1872). Jonas Platt, 1828. Oil on canvas, 35 15/16 x 29 7/16 in. (91.3 x 74.8 cm). Samuel F.B. Morse was at the peak of his career when he portrayed Jonas Platt, who is presented as a soberly dressed man of affairs, with book and documents nearby, facing us in a confident yet thoughtful manner. The drapery and glimpse of sky are scaled-down elements drawn from grandmanner portraiture and signal Platt's prominence.The sitter and artist were both active in politics and concerned with the application of scientific and technological advances to national purpose. Platt had been an early promoter of the Erie Canal, and Morse was not only the finest portrait painter in New York, but an inventor as well. A decade after completing this work, Morse retired from his artistic career to devote himself to the development of the telegraph. American Art 1828

$Fragments of Rhind Mathematical Papyrus Fragments of Rhind Mathematical Papyrus, ca. 1493-1481 B.C.E. Papyrus, ink, Largest Fragment: 6 5/16 x 3 3/8 in. (16 x 8.5 cm). This papyrus was most likely a mathematical reference textbook for the use of scribes. These fragments became separated from the main papyrus when the roll was broken into two parts, probably at the time of its discovery in the mid-nineteenth century. The fragments seen in the upper register, and those few on the right, are from the end of a section that dealt with the simplification of fractions. The fragments in the five lower registers on the left come from the beginning of the section that demonstrated the equitable division of one, two, six, seven, eight, and nine loaves of bread among ten men. Health Breach -- Some suburban shopkeepers are defying Health regulations to wrap bread completely.They are still handing loaves to customers with only a narrow "strip" wrapping around the centre of the loaf.A Crow's Nest shop sold the loaf above with a wrapping strip only 6½in wide around it. Wrapping necessary to cover the bread properly is 16in × 27in.Chief Food Inspector Williams said this week departmental inspectors had begun collecting evidence to prosecute some shopkeepers. Violet Sleeping John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). Violet Sleeping, ca. 1907-1908. Translucent and opaque watercolor and graphite, with graphite underdrawing, 14 11/16 x 21 5/16in. (37.3 x 54.1cm). In this painting of his beloved sister Violet, a later addition to Brooklyns holdings, Sargent used faint graphite underdrawing to loosely block in the reclining figure and the support on which her head and arm rest. After applying watercolor washes and opaque white highlights, he drew in graphite on top of the paint to delineate the folds and sleeves of Violets blouse. Her eyes, ears, nose, lips, chin, and hands are also defined by graphite marks over the watercolor. American Art ca. 1907-1908
