Date: 1832 or 1833.Corot painted this study in the summer of 1832 or 1833 in Bas-Brau, a section of Fontainebleau forest that was famous for its immense oak trees. It was executed in the naturalistic style that he had previously developed in Italy. The tree reappears in Hagar in the Wilderness, the large canvas he exhibited at the 1835 Paris Salon. Improbably, in his realization of that biblical scene, Corot transplanted the oak from northern France to the Palestine desert.Corot gave this work to his friend Clestin Nanteuil (1813-1873), who made a reproductive lithograph after Hagar. Waterfall ca. 1889-91 John Henry Twachtman American In 1889 Twachtman discovered the ideal location in which to work and raise his children: Greenwich, Connecticut. He purchased several acres of land and a small farmhouse, which served as his residence and studio. Although he commuted to New York City to teach, he relished his days at home and often painted the surrounding landscape, especially the brook and waterfall in his backyard. Twachtmans close vantage point in this scene suggests his love of and absorption in nature, while the palette and lively brushwork signal his affiliation with the Impressionists.. Waterfall 12845

Road in the Woods mid-1840s Constant Troyon French In this animated scene of a simple dirt track, the eye is led simultaneously upward to the left and downward to the right. Troyon adopted this dual perspective from seventeenth-century Dutch landscape painting, which vanguard French artists of his generation studied for naturalistic alternatives to more formal, Italianate models favored by the state-sponsored Académie des Beaux-Arts. Troyon depicted the penetration of brilliant sunlight through the tree canopy with palpitating brushwork that was rarely equaled in the mid-1840s, when this work was probably painted.. Date: 1837.Unlike many of the Barbizon painters who traveled to Italy or throughout France for practical training, Dupre traveled to England in 1834 for a short but critical period of study. It was there that he encountered Constable, a renowned British landscape artist, and started to emulate the sense of movement and energy present in Constable's landscapes. Painted several years after his trip to England, this landscape is dynamic: movement stirs among the grazing cattle and through the leaves of the trees. The bright white clouds give way to dark, ominous ones that encroach upon the scene. Dupre's chromatic structuring, as he contrasts light and shadow for a highly dramatic effect, sets him apart from other Barbizon painters. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
