The Coronation of the Virgin, and Saints 1394 Giovanni di Tano Fei Italian The only Gothic altarpiece in the Metropolitans collection with all of its components, this work was painted for Alderotto Brunelleschis chapel in the church of San Leo in Florence. He and his uncle Silvestro are portrayed in the predella. In the main panels are Saints Bernard and Sylvester, and Nicholas and Julian flank the central scene where Christ crowns his mother accompanied by angel musicians. The roundels above contain busts of unidentified prophets and of Christ. The scenes in the predella show the apostles Peter and Paul appearing to Constantine in a dream and Pope Sylvester baptizing Constantine, Sylvester raising the bull, and Sylvester binding the mouth of a poisonous dragon and resuscitating magicians killed by the dragons breath.. Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints ca. 1340 Taddeo Gaddi Italian This important altarpiece was painted by Giotto's pupil Taddeo Gaddi. Originally, the figures were shown on individually framed, arched panels, as was traditional with Gothic altarpieces. It would have had pinnacles and a base (predella). A century and a half later the Gothic frame, which by then would have been considered old-fashioned, was removed and the present rectangular one in Renaissance style was added. The spandrels between the panels were painted in an updated style by Davide Ghirlandaio (1452-1525). Retable with Scenes from the Life of Saint Andrew ca. 1420-30 Attributed to the Master of Roussillon Spanish In the central panel, Saint Andrewapostle, brother of Saint Peter, and disciple of Saint John the Baptistsits holding his attribute, a cross, which is more commonly represented in the form of an X. Above are the Virgin and Child surrounded by saints and angels. The flanking panels depict important events in Saint Andrew’s life, while the scenes in the predella below are devoted to a number of more obscure episodes. The center panel represents Christ as the Man of Sorrows. The panel on the right has been lost. A rectangular section in the lower part of the main panel with the seated Saint Andrew was cut out, perhaps to hold a reliquary, and has been replaced with an inpainted panel.This altar is thought to be the major work of an anonymous artist who was influenced by Lluís Borrassà (active 1380-1424/5) and is known as the Master of Roussillon, after the region in which he work
