John Frederick Blumenbach (1752-1841), German physician and physiologist 1834 Pierre Jean David d'Angers French Pierre-Jean David dAngers was the most prolific and one of the most important French sculptors of the first half of the nineteenth century. Throughout his almost fifty-year career (1819-1856) David remained true to his conviction that sculptural monuments dedicated to the achievements of great men and women most permanently and vividly express the greatness of a people. He continuously sought commissions for monuments portraying historical and contemporary figures whom he admired in order to commit their contributions to posterity. His most famous public commission, the figurative pediment of the Pantheon in Paris (1830-1837), which commemorates great men and was dedicated by a grateful nation, exemplifies these life-long principles. David dAngers extended his definition of public monuments to include portrait medallions. In the 1820s he dedicated himself to a personal camp

Cameo Portrait of Frederick Marshall ca. 1855 American Cameos are small sculptures carved in relief on a hard substance such as stone, coral, glass, or, as here, shell. Commonly, cameos are carved from materials with two or more inherent layers of color, allowing the sculptor to create contrast between the relief figures and background. Hardstone cameos were carved with great skill by lapidaries of the ancient classical world, and the art enjoyed a revival during the nineteenth century, when all things archaeological were in vogue. Though classical scenes and mythological beings were the favorite subject for Victorian cameo consumers and manufacturers, portraits of historic and contemporary persons (e.g. William Shakespeare or Florence Nightingale), as well as commissioned portraits of individuals enjoyed popularity.
