La Vielle aux Loques 1858 James McNeill Whistler American After visiting the Rhineland during a summer-fall tour in 1858, Whistler created this image of an elderly woman sorting rags (loques). He here develops a formula to which he would often returnusing an open entrance to frame a receding interior that contains figures and objects. Like "La Mère Gérard" and "La Rétameuse," the artist focuses on an old working woman, dignified but without sentiment. Created late in 1858 this is one of the most complex prints in "Douze eaux-fortes d’après nature" (Twelve Etchings from Nature), the artist's first published set. This impression belonged to Thomas Winans, a Baltimore friend who financed the artist's move to Paris in 1855; Winans kept the print in an album that descendants gave to the Museum.. An Uninteresting Story 1878 James Tissot Soon after his arrival in England in 1871, Tissot made a series of eighteenth-century costume genre scenes with the Thames river as a backdrop. It was not until later in the decade that he decided to make an etching after one of these Thames-side historical pictures. "An Uninteresting Story" reproduces a painting of the same title (private collection), which is itself based on the first work the artist exhibited at the Royal Academy, titled ironically, "An Interesting Story," ca. 1872 (National Gallery of Victoria). The comedic narrative subject of both versions aimed to appeal to Victorian tastes. In adopting the Thames-side setting, Tissot recalled the work of James McNeill Whistler, who had produced a suite of etchings featuring east London riverside scenes in 1859-61..
