Juan de la Cierva y Codorníu, 1st Count of De La Cierva (1895-1936) was a Spanish civil engineer, pilot and aeronautical engineer. His most famous accomplishment was the invention in 1920 of the Autogiro,1 a single-rotor type of aircraft that came to be called autogyro in the English language. Smertenko Leaves Croydon After Night At Police Station - Professor Smertenko takes a last look at Croydon from the cabin of the plane as he departs. Having spent the night in Wallington Police station, Surrey, Professor Johan Smertenko, 50-year-old Vice-President of the American League for a Free Palestine left Croydon Aerodrome, near London, to return to Paris. He flew in the same private-charter French plane in which he had come to Britain in difiance of a Home Office ban on his entry. The ban had been imposed following Smertenko's visit last December, when he had accused Britain of maintaining a region of terror in Palestine. January 16, 1947.

The chaference Öland during the test trip.Malmö shipbuilding historical association has received the album of a son of Nils Holmström.Peter Skanze from the association has in contacts with the Historical Museum's manager Hans-Lennart Ohlsson expressed that the gift is aimed at the Maritime History Museum, while in the donation letter a "desire to the album ends up at any museum with a focus on our marine heritage".At sea-historical, there is already an extensive collection of photographs from Kockum's MV.Since the images show the warships fit the album better in Marine Museum Karlskrona's gathering area and was therefore added to Marine Museum's collections.

France Has The World's First Miniature Jet Aircraft M. Garden the inventor of the "minijet" in the cockpit of his aircraft *****. The new Sipa 200 "miniature jet aircraft invented by M. Gardan, was flown in public for the first time at Toussus-Le-Noble, France. The tiny two-seater weighs under one ton and has a wing span of about 23 feet. It has a cruising speed of 250mph. A .10-scale model of Convairs XF-102 in the 8- by 6-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory for jet exit studies. The XF-102 was a prototype of the F-102 Delta Dagger. The F-102 served as an interceptor against long range bombers from the Soviet Union. The aircraft was powered by a Pratt and Whitney J57 turbojet. The first prototype crashed two weeks after is first flight on October 24, 1953, just months after this photograph. Engineers then incorporated the fixed-wing design to reduce drag at supersonic speeds. The production model F-102 became the first delta-wing supersonic aircraft in operation. The 8- by 6-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel is used to study propulsion systems, including inlets and exit nozzles, combustion fuel injectors, flame holders, exit nozzles, and controls on ramjet and turbojet engines. Flexible sidewalls alter the tunnels nozzle shape to vary the Mach number during operation. A sev

Amy Johnson broadcasting from Croydon Airport, 1930, (1933). In 1930, British aviator Johnson (1903-1941) became the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia in her DH60 Moth aeroplane 'Jason' and in 1933 she flew non-stop across the Atlantic in a De Havilland biplane with her husband James Mollison.
