His most famous accomplishment was the invention in 1920 of the Autogiro,1 a single-rotor type of aircraft that came to be called autogyro in the English language. Smertenko Leaves Croydon After Night At Police Station - Professor Smertenko takes a last look at Croydon from the cabin of the plane as he departs. Having spent the night in Wallington Police station, Surrey, Professor Johan Smertenko, 50-year-old Vice-President of the American League for a Free Palestine left Croydon Aerodrome, near London, to return to Paris. He flew in the same private-charter French plane in which he had come to Britain in difiance of a Home Office ban on his entry. The ban had been imposed following Smertenko's visit last December, when he had accused Britain of maintaining a region of terror in Palestine. January 16, 1947.
