Aviation in Britain Before the First World War Nulli Secundus I in the airship shed with the gondola holding the engine and propellers attached. Cody was responsible for the design of the nacelle and spar frame that attached the nacelle to the airship envelope and kept the latter rigid. The construction of the frame from hickory, spruce and bamboo followed similar lines to the methods used for his kites and gliders. It was in this airship that Cody and Colonel Capper of the Balloon School at Aldershot made their record breaking flight from Farnborough to London The journey of 40 miles took three hours twenty five minutes and included circling St Paul's Cathedral. It finished at the cycle stadium next to Crystal Palace. At the time this was a world record for a non-rigid airship. Colonel Capper was instrumental in the War Office deciding to use Cody's man carrying kites and appointing him as instructor. After this their relationship soured, due partly to Capper's bias towards airships r

S69-41985 (14 Aug. 1969) --- The Apollo 11 spacecraft Command Module (CM) is loaded aboard a Super Guppy Aircraft at Ellington Air Force Base for shipment to the North American Rockwell Corporation at Downey, California. The CM was just released from its postflight quarantine at the Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC). The Apollo 11 spacecraft was flown by astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, commander; Michael Collins, command module pilot; and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot, during their lunar landing mission. Note damage to aft heat shield caused by extreme heat of Earth reentry. North American Rockwell is the prime contractor for the Apollo Command and Service Modules (CSM).

The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory acquired two Lockheed P-38J Lightning in October 1944 to augment their burgeoning icing research program. The P-38 was a high-altitude interceptor with a unique twin fuselage configuration. Lockheed designed the aircraft in 1938 and 1939. Its two Allison V-1710 engines carried the aircraft to altitudes up to 40,000 feet. The P-38 was used extensively during World War II in a variety of roles. In August 1943, Lockheed began producing an improved version, the P-38J that included better cockpit heating, engine cooling, and dive flaps. The military loaned the NACA two P-38Js to determine the amount of ice formation on the induction system of the turbosupercharger-equipped engines. In 1944 and 1945 one of the aircraft was subjected to ground tests using an engine blower on the hangar apron. New Midget Italian Scientific Submarine -- Pietro Vassena in the conning tower of his midget submarine, known as the "G.3". Picture made at the inventor's workshop at lake Como, Italy.Pietro Vassena, 50-year-old Italian inventor will shortly carry out tests at Lake Como with the midget two-man treasure-seeking and grappling submarine which he has designed. The craft. 25 feet long and four feet six inches wide, can descend to a depth of 2,400 feet and remain submerged for 20 hours. On the surface it is powered by a 40/50 H.P. car engine and, when submerged, by an electric 20 H.P. motor which gives it a submerged speed of 16 M.P.H. the batteries giant pincers in the bow and two mechanically articulated hands in the stern capable of clutching small objects.
