Royal Visit To H.M.S. "Penelope" - The Duke of Gloucester paid a surprise visit to H.M.S. "Penelope" after her gallant and prelonged action with enemy aircraft in the Mediterranean. During a fortnight's stay at Malta, the British cruise was the chief target of some of the heaviest raids the island has yet experienced, and on putting to son she was repeatedly attacked by both German and Italian dive and torpedo - bombers. The whole of this time her guns were almost continuously in action, and to such good effect that the ship escaped with only superficial damage from splinters. Six of her Officers and men were killed and a largers on until he had brought her safely into harbour. June 07, 1950. (Photo by British Official Photograph).

Operation Pedestal, August 1942 12 August: Air Attacks: Army gunners man a 40mm Bofors gun aboard Melbourne Star. These weapons were intended for the air defence of Malta, and were nominally part of the cargo, but were used to supplement the ship's close range armament.

Groundnuts In The Gambia Make Margarine For Britain: The Gambian stevedores head load the groundnuts in an endless stream up and down the wide ramp as they load the cargo vital to the Allied war production.Though the Gambia is the smallest of the British West African territories, little more than 4,000 square miles and with a population of only 200,000, it is making a very real contribution to the Allied War effort. Pubic recognition has been given to the vital part played by its airfields in the North-West African campaign, but the Gambians are fighting in Burma as members of the West African Expeditionary Force, and meanwhile, from the Gambian home front is coming maximum production of a commodity vitally important to the British people's wartime diet - groundnuts.
