This image, dating to around 1899, Alfred the Great as a child. Alfred the Great was King of the West Saxons from 871 to c. 886 and King of the Anglo-Saxons from c. 886 until his death in 899. He was the youngest son of King Uthelwulf and his first wife Osburh, who both died when Alfred was young. The artist is Frances Brundage, an American who died in 1937.

According to Greek mythology, Camilla was a member of the Volsci, an Italic tribe. Her parents were King Metabus and Casmilla. According to Virgil's Aeneid, Metabus was dethroned by his people and forced to flee. He grabbed his daughter and as the Volsci chase him, he fears for Camilla, attaches her to his spear and flings both across the River Amasenus and then he swims across and got her. Later Camilla joins with Turnus, king of the Rutuli, and they fight against Aeneas and his followers who have fled Troy after the Trojans lose to the Greeks in the Trojan War. The caption for this illustration reads: Why do you weep, my brother The illustration is from a 1921 book on Serbian myths and legends. The tale is the "Ram with the Golden Fleece." A father had tried to kill a ram with golden fleece, but was killed byt the ram. Years later, his sone met the ram and did kill him, but the king wanted the fleece. The boy refused and the king said to keep the fleece he had to plant a vineyard and bring him wine from it in seven days. The boy went and cried, knowing the deed was impossible. The illustration here shows the girl who appeared to him and helped him do the task. The illustration is from a 1921 book on Serbian myths and legends.

According to Egyptian mythology, Set fooled his brother Osiris into stepping into a coffin. Set then sealed the coffin and threw it into the Nile river. It floated to Byblos (in present-day Lebanon) where it became imbedded in a cedar tree trunk. The cedar tree was cut down and used as a column in the palace. When Osiris' wife, Isis, learned what happened, she went to the palace and, to get closer access to the king and the tree, she acted as a nursemaid to the baby prince. This 1915 illustration by American artist Evelyn Paul shows Isis carrying for the baby prince.
