Recens Edita Totius Novi Belgii, in America Septentrionali An Updated View of New Netherlands in North America ca. 1730 Matthäus Seutter The Augsburg mapmaker Seutter based this rendering of America’s eastern seaboard on seventeenth-century precedents. A vignette view of Manhattan reproduces one created in 1654 to mark Holland’s brief repossession of the city. By 1730, Britain was in control, indicated here by George II seated below to receive Hermes, Athena, and Hera (symbolizing commerce, wisdom, and wealth), followed by dark-skinned figures carrying raw materials—an allegorized celebration of colonization that ignores the suffering endured by native and enslaved peoples. On the map, Native American place names predominate, with turkeys, moose, bears, and beavers used to indicate wilderness areas. These two maps, portraying portions of Cornwall and Wales, were originally prepared by Gerard Mercator, one of the greatest of early Dutch map makers. These two atlas sheets were published in either the 1628 or 1633 French edition of Mercator and Jodocus Hondiuss Atlas. Originally published in 1595, this book of maps was the first such publication to use the term atlas to describe a collection of published maps. The use of this term is often associated with the Greek Titan, Atlas, who was condemned by Zeus to carry the heavens and earth on his shoulders for all time.. Yunnan became part of the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 CE) during the 2nd century BC. It became the seat of a Tibeto-Burman speaking kingdom known as Nanzhao in the 8th century. Nanzhao was multi-ethnic, but the elite most likely spoke a northern dialect of Yi, which became established as the prestige dialect. The Mongols conquered the region in the 13th century, with local control exercised by warlords until the 1930s. As with other parts of China's southwest, Japanese occupation in the north during World War II forced a migration of Chinese into the region. Ethnic minorities in Yunnan account for about 34 percent of its total population. Major ethnic groups include Yi, Bai, Hani, Zhuang, Dai and Miao.
