Close Helmet for the Tilt 1573 German, Augsburg The helmet is part of a richly decorated armor made for one of the princes Radziwill of Poland for use in the field and the tournament. Close Helmet ca. 1510-20 Gian Giacomo Negroli As the only known work that may be ascribed with reasonable certainty to Gian Giacomo Negroli (1463-1543), this previously unrecorded helmet is a major addition to the small corpus of works marked or signed by members of the celebrated Negroli family of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Milanese armorers--no more than twenty pieces in total--of which key examples are in the Metropolitan Museums collection. The father of Filippo Negroli (ca. 1510-1579), one of the greatest armorers of Renaissance Europe, and of Francesco Negroli (ca. 1522-1600), a consummate damascener, Gian Giacomo was an eminent armorer in his own right. Active in Milan around the turn of the sixteenth century, he was one of the most successful members of the Negroli family, and it was in his workshop that Filippo and his brothers long worked and presumably acquired many of the skills that distinguish their works. Ruiter helmet from iron. Ruiter helmet, iron, blank, the helmet bulb composed of two halves. Long low comb with a barged edge ending under the iron plum sleeve. The articulated neck plate is indicated on the helmet bulb and has a barbed flange edge. From the front ended with three plates, foldable at a common point. The chin plate is riveted to the articulated neck plate and the helmet globe and has a rubbed edge. On the left side of the chin plate a hook that can be fixed to the lower visor. Parallel walking to the edge decoration objection with rivets flattened below. The face plate has three vertical bars that each has a bulging in the middle. All around decoration lines. Ring collar. Ring collar, iron, blank, made from four parts that are riveted to each other on both sides of the opening with round opening in the middle. The edges are shed up and are taabeld. At the front a slightly pounded border with glacial rivets in between. Opening to the head has a folded-flien edge that is charged consists of two parts that are riveted to each other on side. The inside is painted black.

Cabasset ca. 1580-90 Flemish, possibly Antwerp The etching is based on prints by Etienne Delaune (1518 or 1519-1582) of Paris and Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder (1525-1604) of Antwerp. The inscription on the helmet, COLLERT 1585, indicates that its decoration was done by a member of that distinguished Antwerp family of engravers and printmakers.. Cabasset 21972

Elements of a Light-Cavalry Armor. Culture: Italian, Milan. Dimensions: Wt. 19 lb. 13 oz. (8987 g). Date: ca. 1510.This is a rare example of Italian armor decorated with fluted surfaces in the German fashion. Its etched and richly gilt decoration is derived from Christian symbolism and the Bible. The band across the top of the breastplate depicts the Virgin and Child in the center, Saint Paul on the right, and Saint George on the left. A Latin inscription below reads, CHRISTVS RES VENIT IN PACE ET DEVS HOMO FACTVS ES (Christ the King came in peace and God was made man). Another inscription, across the top of the backplate, reads, IESVS AVTEM TRANSIENS PERMEDIVM ILORVM IBAT. (But Jesus passing through their midst went his way Luke 4:30). Helmet, Shield, and Arm Guard 17th-19th century Deccan, Indian The pierced faceguard, topped with the popular Indian motif of the cobra, offered protection without impairing the wearers vision. The phrase "O ‘Ali" in the center is bordered by the following inscription: "There is no hero or man like ‘Ali; there is no sword like Dhul Fiqar. Help from Allah and a speedy victory." Armor ca. 1560-65 Northern German, possibly Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel This is one of a group of finely etched armors made for the court of Duke Julius of Brunswick-Wölfenbüttel (1528-1589). The armors are decorated similarly with satyrs, allegorical figures, and grotesques, many of which are derived from prints by Cornelis Bos and Virgil Solis. The group is distinguished further, as is the armor displayed here, by the device on the breast: a quatrefoil above a crowned heart, which is flanked by two pairs of clasped hands and the initials HI (Herzog Iulius, meaning Duke Julius” or Heinrich Julius”). The scene depicted in the quatrefoil is the Old Testament story of Daniel in the lions’ den. Around the border runs an inscription that reads in translation, Oh God, protect no more than my life, soul, property, and honor.” It is thought that this group of armors was commissioned about 1563, to commemorate the reconciliation of Julius and his father, Duke Heinrich (died 1568), and the reinst

Armor for Field and Tournament Made 1530-1570 Augsburg. The growing relationship between armor and costume in the 16th century is indicated in the delicately incised and etched center band with scalloped edge on this armor, which mimics the embroidered front closing of a contemporary male doublet (a close-fitted bodice). The particularly fine decoration of etched floral arabesques suggests the workmanship of the Augsburg armory, perhaps of Jˆrg T. Sorg. The elements of this armor are from the same garnitureómultiple matching pieces of armor that could convert a basic suit into various field or sporting armors. Perforations on the breastplate are for bolting a shock-absorbing lance rest in place and reinforcing plate armor for sporting events. When approaching an opponent, the latch door on the helmet would be closed for protection, whereas in more casual times, the door would be opened for air circulation.. Pommel Plate. Culture: German, Augsburg. Dimensions: 8 1/2 x 9 3/8 in. (21.7 x 23.7 cm), Wt. 11 oz. (326 g). Date: ca. 1560-70.The etched decoration of this pommel plate, consisting of interlaced strapwork enclosing heraldically displayed eagles, is very similar to that on an armor in the Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer, Vienna, which was made in Augsburg in 1563 for Archduke Karl of Styria (1540-1590), the youngest son of Emperor Ferdinand I. Although the Museum's plate differs from the Vienna armor in small but significant details, it seems likely that it, too, was an imperial commission and was etched in the same Augsburg workshop. Armor of Mail and Plate late 18th-first half of the 19th century Indian, Sindh (now Pakistan) This distinctive armor, constructed of mail and steel plates decorated with embossed brass plaques, is thought to come from the northeast Indian kingdom of Sind, now a province in southern Pakistan. The region was ruled by mirs of the Talpur family from 1783 until 1843, when it was taken over by the British. Very few of these complete Sind armors survive, and this is one of the best examples.. Date: late 4th-early 3rd century B.C..Probably inspired by Celtic prototypes, and also quickly adopted by the Romans, Montefortino-type helmets were especially popular in Etruria from the fourth to the second centuries B.C. This example is Etruscan and remarkable for its sturdiness, untouched surface, and distinctive ornamentation. Among well over 400 Montefortino-type helmets that have survived, only one other similarly decorated example is known. Originating from the Necropolis del Frontone, Perugia, it now is in the Museo nazionale de Perguia, Italy (inv. 362 B1286).The helmet has a hemispherical one-piece bowl of cast, hammered, chased, and engraved bronze, which is surmounted by an integral medial knob-shaped finial, and flanged at the rear into a sloped nape guard that slightly flares upward.
