The Triumph of Fame over Death ca. 1500-1530 South Netherlandish A team of white elephants pulls a chariot in which the winged figure of Fame rides. Dressed in brocade and ostrich feathers, she sounds a trumpet, heralding the appearance of four famous men: two philosophers, Plato and Aristotle, and two rulers, Alexander the Great, on the far side, and Charlemagne. Alexander bears the golden scepter topped with a hand and other emblems of the kings of France; Charlemagne wears the crown of the Holy Roman Emperor but also the fleur-de-lys of France. Female figures symbolizing Death are trampled underfoot.The theme derives from The Triumphs (I Trionfi), by the fourteenth-century Italian poet Petrarch. By about 1500, it had been translated into French for King Louis XII and illustrated on royal tapestries. Prints served as sources for figures, flowers, and animals, which were drawn onto the fabric and given to the embroideresses. Valance 1580-1610 probably British This valance, executed in wool tent stitch with silk highlights, follows a common compositional structure found in large-scale narrative embroideries and tapestries, that of combining multiple scenes in one continuous panel. The valance depicts scenes from courtly life, but the precise narrative has not been identified. Yvonne Hackenbroch titled this piece "The Education of Princess Elizabeth I" mainly because of the young child with the man in classical garb, said to be a depiction of Elizabeth Is tutor, Roger Ascham, but there is no other iconography to support this reading. The embroidery could simply illustrate the daily activities of ladies at court, although the interaction of the various figures implies the existence of a specific sequence of events.One possible iconographical reading lies in the identification of contemporary female personifications of the Five Senses. Date: ca. 1490-1500.Although the Bible states that the Queen of Sheba posed difficult questions to Solomon, their content, not specified in the biblical text, comes from eastern folklore. Here the queen asks Solomon how to tell the boy from the girl in a look-alike pair and the real flower from an identical artificial flower. Solomon replies that the girl will catch the apple in the lap of her dress and the bee will go only to the real flower. The figure of Solomon shows the influence of the Upper Rhenish engraver Master E.S. The unusual and extensive use of Ghiordes knot in the costumes and in the hair of Solomon is thought to be characteristic of Strasbourg workshops.Please note that this object is exhibited on a rotating basis, due to conservation requirements. The Twelve Ages of a Man: The Second Three Ages (18-36), or Summer ca. 1515 Probably after a design by the Workshop of Bernard van Orley Netherlandish This is the second in a set of four tapestries illustrating the life of a man as divided into twelve periods of six years. Ceres, in the center, stands for the summertime of life; the symbols and occupations of three months, April, May, and June, represent the years from ages 18 to 36. Ceres, Roman goddess of the harvest, is identified in a Latin elegiac distich on a scroll. The pansies and daisies of Ceress dress are not traditionally her flowers, and it has been suggested that they may refer here to the possible patron of this tapestry series, Margaret of Austria, Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands from 1507 until 1530. Two Mounted Warriors mid-16th century The so-called Parthian shot, that is, the arrow shot delivered backward while galloping forward, required considerable practice and was an important skill of the Mongol cavalrymen, which allowed them to better many other armies. Although the horsemen wear post-Ilkhanid tunics, battle scenes from the early fourteenth century are similar in spirit to these sixteenth-century figures, which were drawn from earlier models. The biblical story of Noah is contained in chapters 6-9 of the book of Genesis, where he saves his family and representatives of all animals from the flood by constructing an ark. He is also mentioned as the 'first husbandman' and in the story of the Curse of Ham. Noah is the subject of much elaboration in later Abrahamic traditions. Noah is also mentioned several times in the Qur'an.
