Armet ca. 1520 Anglo-Flemish Formerly part of a funerary achievement hung over a knight's tomb, this helmet originally appeared on the art market surmounted with a spike intended to support a heraldic crest. The location of the chapel and the identity of the knight are not recorded. This late form of armet (now incomplete) originally had a pivoting visor and articulated collar lames. Several features are especially noteworthy: the large cusped brow reinforce that overlaps a secondary reinforce covering the back of the bowl; the articulating lames covering the back of the neck; and the placement of the hinges of the cheekpieces at the back rather than at the top. While its overall form is Italianate, the armet's unusual construction recalls other helmets found in English churches, some of which are thought to be of English or Flemish manufacture.. Armet 26455

Armet ca. 1450-60; rondel, stem, and aventail, later Italian, probably Milan This is part of a large find of medieval armor discovered in 1840 in the ruins of the fortress of Chalcis, on the Greek island of Euboea (then a Venetian colony called Negroponte). The fortress had been captured and destroyed by the Turks in 1470. Now divided largely between the Ethnological Museum, Athens, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chalcis hoard contains many rare and unusual elements of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century armor. Of particular importance are the variety of headpieces and the many fragments of brigandines (armor for the torso constructed of small plates riveted to layers of fabric), some of which retain portions of their original velvet covering. The Chalcis armor provides a unique picture of the armament used in the Aegean, one of the easternmost military outposts of the Venetian empire.. Armet. Right Poleyn (Knee Defense) from an Armor of Claude Gouffier (1501-1570) ca. 1555-60 French This is the only known fragment from what once must have been a magnificent French parade armor. The knee (or poleyn) consists of a main plate covering the kneecap with a heart-shaped wing on the outer side, with a portion of the lame above and a deep downward-overlapping lame below. This last has a turned and boldly roped lower edge, suggesting that it was the terminal lame of a long articulated tasset that extended from the waist to the knee, a type with which no lower leg defenses were worn. Armor so constructed followed Italian prototypes and was typically worn by the light cavalry. Its embossed and gilt decoration, consisting of dense foliate scrollwork and a grotesque mask with ram's horns (fig. 2) at the front of the main plate, recalls the ornamental motifs and workmanship of the Museum's armor of Henry II of France (39.121), which was probably made in a Parisian atelier about 1555. Armor for Field and Tilt ca. 1550-75 Italian This armor garniture comes from the armory of the Dos Aguas family in Valencia, Spain. The garniture is unusually large, containing pieces for use in battle and for the tilt in both the Italian and German fashions. The tilt was a tournament fought on horseback between two opponents armed with lances and separated by a lengthwise barrier. The armor as mounted is equipped with a helmet and vambraces (arm defenses) for the tournament. The buffe (chin defense), second breastplate (acc. no. 27.159.2), and manifer (reinforced left gauntlet) (27.159.6) would have been added to make the armor ready for exchange pieces for different forms of the tournament. For the German tilt, the trellised targe (shield) (27.159.7), small elbow defense (27.159.5), and small stomach defense (27.159.3) were added. For the Italian tilt, these elements were replaced by the form-fitting reinforce covering the left half of the torso and left shoulder (mezzo sovrapetto) (2

Lobster-Tail Burgonet for a Harquebusier. Culture: Dutch or British. Dimensions: H. 11 in. (27.9 cm); W. 8 in. (20.3 cm); D. 13 in. (33 cm); Wt. 2 lb. 9 oz. (1154 g). Date: ca. 1610-20.The rich decoration of this helmet is exceptional, covering it completely with wide bands of chiseled and punched floral designs alternating in silver and gold. Although it was once believed that its neck plate, cheekpieces, plume holder and lining were later restorations, futher study has confirmed that they are genuine and original to the helmet. In its quality and elaborate ornament, this helmet is similar to a Dutch armor in the Tower of London, which was made in 1612 for Henry, Prince of Wales. Date: 4th century. The helmet, originally lined with leather, consists of broad bands of bronze and iron plates covered witha thin layer of silver, stamped with a feather pattern. Comb Morion ca. 1580-90 German, possibly Brunswick This morion matches a breastplate in the Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin, the deeply pointed waistline of which suggests a date for both pieces about 1580-90. The breastplate copies in steel a civilian doublet of textile, complete with buttons down the center. The decoration of raised bands outlined by rows of punched circles can thus be interpreted as an imitation of the strips of metallic braids applied over the seams of a textile costume. The high comb, deep V-shaped brim, and prominent use of decorative brass washers evoke comparisons with northern German armor of the so-called Brunswick school.. Comb Morion. Do Society Mask, early 20th century, 14 5/8 x 5 5/8 in. (37.1 x 14.3 cm), Wood, pigment, Côte d'Ivoire, 19th-20th century, Triple-faced masks of this type are extremely rare. This example was made to be used in the Do masquerade. The three faces might relate to a ceremonial ability to see into the past, present and future. The male and female figures at the top probably represent an ancestral couple, but the meaning of the animal head below the chin remains unclear.

Burgonet ca. 1550-55 Attributed to Desiderius Helmschmid German In the mid-sixteenth century, armor covered with embossed figures and ornament in the Mannerist style was the specialty of Italian armorers such as the Negroli family of Milan and also of a few workshops in France and Flanders. This beautifully scuptural helmet is a rare example of embossed armor made by German craftsmen. It is very similar in design and workmanship to a parade armor made in 1549-50 by Helmschmid and Sigman for the future Philip II of Spain (1527-1598).Faint traces of engraved designs and damascening in gold and silver indicate that originally, this helmet was more lavishly decorated and colorful in appearance.. Elements from a Partial Suit of Armor, c. 1510-30. Germany, 16th century. Steel with black paint; This partial suit of armor contains a close helmet, breastplate, and backplate. Below the breast plate is the fauld, plates of armor that extend below the breastplate to protect the waist and hips. The breastplate includes a lance rest, a metal flange that could be brought down when needed. The lance rest helps spread the impact of a blow through the breastplate to the torso of the wearer, thus redirecting the force of the blow away from the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. The helmet is a true "close helmet"; it pivots open at the rivets on the side and completely protects the face when lowered.

Bascinet ca. 1375-1425 possibly French According to an attribution traceable only to the nineteenth century, this helmet was said to have been worn in battle by Joan of Arc (1412-1431) and to have been given by her to the church of Saint Pierre du Martroi at Orléans, where it hung over the main altar. Although the legend is probably untrue, the helmet does have what looks like damage from use in battle.. Bascinet 21988

Two bronze helmets late 7th century B.C. Greek, Cretan These helmets and the three mitrai exhibited below them are the finest pieces of a large cache of armor that came to light in southern central Crete, where it was undoubtedly made. The inscriptions suggest that the armor was captured as booty and offered as a dedication. In repoussé on both sides of one helmet is a pair of winged youths grasping a pair of intertwined snakes. Below them are two panthers with a common head. The helmet is inscribed "Neopolis." In repoussé on both sides of the other helmet is a horse; incised on each cheekpiece is a lion. The inscription states that Synenitos, the son of Euklotas, took this object. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #1007.
