ISS034-E-009486 (19 Dec. 2012) --- Though somewhat faint, the contrails from the launch of the Expedition 34/35 crew onboard the Soyuz TMA-07M on Dec. 19 are recognizable while the International Space Station and its three-man Expedition 34 crew were over the Caspian Sea. The skies were clear over the Baikonur Cosmodrome at this time, making it possible that these contrail "clouds" would be easy to spot.

Today's false color image shows a cross section of Hebes Chasma, including Hebes Mensa (middle of image). Hebes Chasma is an inclosed basin not connected to Valles Marineris. It is 319 km long (east/west, 198 miles), 130 km wide (north/south, 81miles) and up to 8km (5 miles) deep. Hebes Mensa is a large deposit of layered material within the chasma. Extensive erosion has created gullies in the mensa and distributed fine sand size materials to create dunes and sand drifts. Hebes Mensa is 7.5 km (4.7 miles) high, 120 km (75 miles) long and 43 km (27 miles) wide. P-29498C This false color, Voyager 2 composite view of all nine of Uranian rings was made from six 15 second exposures through the narrow angle camera. The special computer processing used to extract color information from the extremely dark and faint rings, causing the even fainter, pastel lines seen between the rings. Two images, each in the green, clear, & violet filters, were added together and averaged to find the proper color difference between the rings. the final image was made from these three color averages and represents an enhanced, false color view. The image shows that the brightest, or Epsilon ring, at top ,is neutral in color, with the fainter eight other rings showing color differences between them. moving down, toward, Uranus, we see the Delta, Gamma, & Eta rings in shades of blue and green; the Beta & Alpha rings in somewhat lighter tones; and then finally, a set of three, known simply as 4, 5, & 6 rin

Today's false color image shows a cross section of Pavonis Mons, including part of the summit caldera (circular depression). This caldera is approximately 5km (3 miles) deep, much deeper that the larger caldera that surrounds the northern and eastern sides of the small caldera. Pavonis Mons, like the other large volcanoes in the region, is a shield volcano. Shield volcanoes are formed by lava flows originating near or at the summit, building up layers upon layers of lava. In shield volcanoes summit calderas are typically formed where the surface collapses into the void formed by an emptied magma chamber. Pavonis Mons is one of the three aligned Tharsis Volcanoes. ISS006-E-08775 (14 December 2002) --- View of a bubble formed as a result of a Zeolite Crystal Growth (ZCG) experiment in the Destiny laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS). Expedition Six Commander Kenneth D. Bowersox used a Space Station drill to mix 12 Zeolite samples in clear tubes. Scientists on the ground watching on TV noticed bubbles in the samples. Bowersox used a modified mixing procedure to process autoclaves to isolate bubbles. He re-inserted the samples in the ZCG furnace in Express Rack 2 in the U.S. laboratory/Destiny. This experiment has shown that the bubbles could cause larger number of smaller deformed crystals to grow. Bowersox rotated the samples so that the heavier fluid was thrown to the outside while the lighter bubbles stayed on the inside.
