Translucent watercolor and touches of opaque watercolor with graphite underdrawing, 12 1/16 x 18 1/8 in. (30.6 x 46 cm). In keeping with his approach to port subjects, Sargent offered no particularities of place in this scene but instead lavished his attention on the vibrant colors of reflected light and cast shadows that play across the rust-stained white hulls and the network of masts, spars, and riggings. He seems to have reveled in the transparency of the watercolor medium, which allowed the white of the paper to add a particular brilliance to scenes such as this one. American Art ca. 1905-1906

The Bridge. Jacob Maris painted this bridge in The Hague, his city of residence. The farmers wife carrying two pails of milk with a yoke and the farmer in the sand barge attest to just how rural The Hague was at the time. A sketch of the same motif is also on display in this gallery. Maris captured the scene with powerful strokes. He made the sketch out of doors, and the worked-up painting in his studio.
