Friday afternoon, October 22, 1948, the Express train Batavia-Bandoeng is located at 4.50 pm two kilometers south of Poerwakarta, at Bendoel, as the rails had broken up through a gang terrorists over a distance of twenty meters. Immediately after the derailment, the train was taken under fire by the automatic weapons and guns, manned of an estimated fifty man, so that eight people were killed and twenty-three injured. Because a significant number of soldiers increased by train, the fire from the gang could almost immediately be answered. This prevents worse. Overview of the derailed wagons. October 23, 1948. New 21-Passenger Plane Arrives -- New Giant Airliner for Australian National Airway being landed from the freighter Clydebank in Melbourne today. She is a 21-passenger Douglas DC3. When assembly and tests are completed the plane will be christened Kanana ("Silent") and put into commission. A sister machine, to be known as the Warana ("Blue Sky") is on the way here. Vintage Car Goes Back To Land Of It's Origin -- A vintage car, on "Orient Express" 1903, the last of it's kind, being loaded aboard the "American Planter" at the Royal Victoria Dock (London) today. This two-cylinder, 6 h.p. Metz-Benz car was originally designed and built by Metz in the U.S.A., for the Waltham Watch Company and is one of a number of antique models recently purchased in this country by Messrs. Wingate and Johnston Ltd., for Merritt Antiques of Douglasville, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. July 29, 1954. (Photo by Fox Photos).

Aviation in Britain Before the First World War A close up of the 4 cylinder Green engine almost certainly mounted on the Cody aircraft mark II. Cody built this aircraft in 1910; the previous aircraft had been in several crashes and was suffering generally from constant usage. The design of this aircraft followed similar lines to the previous one though the wingspan was shorter by around six feet and the wing area around a third smaller. The single propeller was originally intended to be powered by two 60 hp Green engines (mark IIA) though problems with synchronicity meant that this was never carried out. This did mean that the aircraft was underpowered though alterations to the engine and the removal of excess weight partly solved this problem (marks IIB to IID). When this engine was replaced with a 120 hp Austro-Daimler, the aircraft performed well, and in January 1912 carried Cody and four passengers. It was eventually crashed by Lieut. Development of high speed railway travel; two drivers in the cab of the Saint Bartholomew. On its initial run the locomotive arrived into Paddington three minutes early, covering just over 77 miles in 72 minutes, with a highest speed of 83 mph. Date: 4th August 1923

Aviation in Britain Before the First World War A good close up of Austro-Daimler engine mounted on Cody aircraft mark V. With the help of his family and friends Cody built the mark V mainly from the remains of the mark III in just four weeks, after both the aircraft that he intended to enter in the trials were written off. It was powered by the 120 hp Austro-Daimler engine which was relatively unscathed from the crashes it had been in. Note the triangular rudders similar to those on the monoplane. It was with this machine that Cody won both the International Division and the British Division (GBP5000 prize in total) of the 1912 military trials, a competition to find an aircraft for the army. 32 machines were entered from 21 companies in a series of tests. These tests covered areas such as rate of climb, speed (both fast and slow), glide angle, landing distance, time of assembly and ability to fly in a high wind.
