Astronaut Donald R. Pettit, Expedition Six NASA ISS science officer, photographed this view of a surface tension demonstration using water that is held in place by a metal loop. The experiment took place in the Destiny laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS). The Expedition Six crew was delivered to the station via the Space Shuttle Orbiter Endeavor STS-113 mission which was launched on November 23, 2002.

Insects preserved in amber can date from as early as the Upper Carboniferous period (320 million years ago). Amber is a unique preservation mode, preserving otherwise unfossilizable parts of organisms; as such it is helpful in the reconstruction of ecosystems as well as organisms; Amber sometimes contains animals or plant matter that became caught in the resin as it was secreted.

This global map of Mars shows a growing dust storm as of June 6, 2018. The map was produced by the Mars Color Imager (MARCI) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft. The blue dot shows the approximate location of Opportunity. The storm was first detected on June 1. The MARCI camera has been used to monitor the storm ever since. Full dust storms like this one are not surprising, but are infrequent. They can crop up suddenly but last weeks, even months. During southern summer, sunlight warms dust particles, lifting them higher into the atmosphere and creating more wind. That wind kicks up yet more dust, creating a feedback loop that NASA scientists still seek to understand.

A scientist's hands holding three test tubes. The one on the left contains normal healthy t-lymphocytes, notice the pellet on the bottom. The middle vial has t-cells that have been infected with the AIDS virus HIV also known as HTLV-III; note the pellet has been destroyed since the cells have died. The test tube on the right contains t-lymphocytes that were exposed to the AIDS virus but since they were protected by AZT, the cells were not destroyed and the pellet stayed intact. STS070-309-026 (13-22 JULY 1995) --- A close-up view of the space shuttle Discoverys window number 6, on the forward starboard side, nearest the pilots station. A small impact in the window, about 1/16 inch in size, is clearly seen in the corner. Crew members told a August 11, 1995, gathering of Johnson Space Center (JSC) employees that a small piece of debris apparently struck the window during Discoverys wing velocity vector mode. It was noticed when the astronauts awoke from their sleep period. Though watched closely during the remainder of the mission, the impact never caused a major concern.
