The lifts is decorated with a pepilled pattern of small circles with a dot in the middle and around it a band of dots and a band of stripes. Two widening devices have been applied in the lifting, one of which has been opened, the other is decorated with a floral pattern. Prick Spur (Left) 19th century Algerian The prick spurs traditionally used in most of the Islamic world evolved directly from late Antique examples. They consist of straight U-shaped branches bearing a very long prick with sometimes a disc at its base. The flat loop at the top of the heel is used for attaching the strap going around the ankle. Here the latter and the left side of the spur are adorned with silver foil bands chiseled with vegetal scrolls and inlaid with coral cabochons, a type of decoration also found on Algerian Berber jewelry as well. Traditionally, Moroccan riders take great pride in their horses and still frequently adorn them with shiny and colorful tack for parades and festivals. Left and Right Knee Defenses (Poleyns) ca. 1460 Western European This is part of a large find of medieval armor discovered in 1840 in the ruins of the fortress of Chalcis, on the Greek island of Euboea (then a Venetian colony called Negroponte). The fortress had been captured and destroyed by the Turks in 1470. Now divided largely between the Ethnological Museum, Athens, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chalcis hoard contains many rare and unusual elements of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century armor. Of particular importance are the variety of headpieces and the many fragments of brigandines (armor for the torso constructed of small plates riveted to layers of fabric), some of which retain portions of their original velvet covering. The battle spring is broken, the slot is seriously corroded but the parts of the mechanism are still clearly recognizable. NM-7838 is mentioned incorrectly in connection with this object!
