CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At the Astronaut Hall of Fame near the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida, fifth- through eighth-grade students and their parents participate in a Lego robotics demonstration during the last NASA family education night event. Other activities included "gee-whiz" presentations, astronaut appearances, a hovercraft, vortex cannon and alternative fuel vehicles, which promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.The event is part of NASA's Summer of Innovation initiative to provide interactive learning experiences to middle school students nationwide during the summer months. Visitors to the Hampton Roads Naval Museums 12th Annual Brick by Brick: LEGO Shipbuilding event at the Decker Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center in Downtown Norfolk, Virginia look at a large scale LEGO ship models on display. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- On the NASA Causeway at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, school children build LEGO space vehicles inside a 40- by 70-foot activity tent. There, children of all ages are building their vision of the future with LEGO bricks, marking the beginning of a three-year Space Act Agreement between NASA and The LEGO Group. The partnership is meant to spark the interest of children in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). To commemorate the partnership, two small LEGO space shuttles will launch aboard space shuttle Discovery's STS-133 mission to the International Space Station and the company will release four NASA-inspired products in its LEGO CITY line next year. LEGO sets also will fly to the space station aboard Endeavour's STS-134 mission, and will be put together on orbit to demonstrate the challenges faced while building things in microgravity.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida teams of five students are using kits with identical plastic pieces to build a space station-like truss. Following construction, weights were added to determine its strength and points were awarded based on how much weight their truss would support.Between Nov. 26 and Dec. 7, 2012, about 5,300 sixth-graders in Brevard County, Florida were bused to Kennedy's Visitor Complex for Brevard Space Week, an educational program designed to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics STEM careers.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Students from California Polytechnic Institute, or CalPoly, and Merritt Island High School in Florida perform integration tests on a pair of cubesats they will fly on a suborbital mission in the summer. A team from each school built a satellite and the two will work together inside a small rocket to measure vibration and other data during launch. NASA engineers, including Shaun Daly, in gray shirt, are acting as mentors for the project and some of the space agency's labs at Kennedy Space Center, including this one inside the Operations and Checkout Building, are being used by the teams.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Members of the Merritt Island and Edgewood Middle School students/Lockheed Martin team maneuver their robot during competition. They are participating in the 2003 Southeastern Regional FIRST Robotic Competition being held at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, March 20-23. Forty teams from around the country are participating in the event that pits team-built gladiator robots against each other in an athletic-style competition. The teams are sponsored by NASA-Kennedy Space Center, The Boeing Company/Brevard Community College, and Lockheed Martin Space Operations/Mission Systems for the nonprofit organization For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, known as FIRST. The vision of FIRST is to inspire in the youth of our nation an appreciation of science and technology and an understanding that mastering these disciplines can enrich the lives of all mankind.

Lauderdale was co-sponsored by Nortel Networks and NASA Kennedy Space Center. Considered the "little league" of the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, FLL is the result of a partnership between FIRST and the LEGO™ Company. FLL extends the FIRST concept of inspiring and celebrating science and technology to children aged 9 through 14, using real-world context and hands-on experimentation. Young participants can build a robot and compete in a friendly, FIRST-style robotics event specially designed for their age group.
