Peach Blossoms--Villiers-le-Bel. Artist: Childe Hassam (American, Dorchester, Massachusetts 1859-1935 East Hampton, New York). Dimensions: 21 1/2 x 18 1/8 in. (54.6 x 46 cm). Date: 1887-89.Hassam studied in Paris from 1887 to 1889. During the summers, he and his wife visited friends at Villiers-le-Bel, about ten miles northeast of the city, in the Oise River valley. There, Hassam painted a series of delightful garden scenes that reflect his lifelong interest in the subject. Although he produced few simple landscapes in the French countryside, this canvas is an exquisite exception. The unruly, overgrown peach tree in an orchard is delectably dynamic, especially in contrast to the controlled vision of nature in the manicured garden that usually preoccupied Hassam at Villiers-le-Bel. Poplars, Éragny 1895 Camille Pissarro French This canvas of summer 1895 shows a corner of Pissarro's garden at Éragny, a small village in northern France where he lived from 1884 until his death. Pissarro likely painted this view from his studio window, as a persistent eye ailment hampered him from working outdoors. The picture was among the works that Pissarro sold in November to the dealer Durand-Ruel, who included it in a major exhibition of the artists work the following spring.. Poplars, Éragny 437307

Willows Theodore Robinson (American, 1852-1896). Willows, ca. 1892. Oil on canvas, 17 15/16 x 21 11/16 in. (45.6 x 55.1 cm). This painting exemplifies the artist's debt to the French Impressionist Claude Monet, whom Robinson befriended in Giverny, a small farming village northwest of Paris. Robinson used loose brushwork and thick daubs of pure color to capture the glistening effects of sunlight over the Giverny landscape. The white mill in the background appeared in several of Robinson's works, suggesting that he emulated Monet's practice of painting a single motifsuch as haystacksat different times of day and from different vantage points to explore changes in light and atmosphere. Autumn Landscape.Weissenbruch spent a great deal of time in the village of Noorden along the Nieuwkoop lakes, where he ventured out to sketch, even in poor weather. He worked up these sketches later in his studio. In Autumn Landscape the paint layers were applied wet-on-wet in an ultimate attempt to capture on canvas the damp atmosphere of the Dutch polder landscape.

Fir Trees in Les Trembleaux, near Marlotte (Sapins aux Trembleaux à Marlotte) 1854 Henri-Joseph Harpignies French This vertically oriented landscape is an early work by Harpignies that was painted near Marlotte, a small village southeast of Paris and on the edge of the Forest of Fountainbleau. An heir to the traditions of the Barbizon painters who worked in this region, Harpignies painted this landscape en plein air, or outdoors, as many Barbizon painters did. We are certain of this by the inscription written in the hand of Harpignies on the reverse side of the canvas which reads: faite d’après nature” (painted from life). As a result, this landscape is fresh and direct. The two advancing figures, probably a father and son, animate the idyllic scene. The fir trees that fill the shaded foreground extend vertically beyond the canvas and frame the figures, creating a receding passageway to the golden hills and crisp, sunlit sky of the background..
