The Interrupted Sleep 1750 François Boucher French In Bouchers pastorals, the dirt and labor of peasant life was set aside in favor of elegant clothing and idyll romance. Such visions were the roots of Marie Antoinettes adoption of simple dress and manners at her pleasure dairy, known as The Queens Hamlet, at the Chteau de Versailles. The simplicity of the subject belies the complexity of the composition, which is organized around a series of intersecting diagonals. Much admired at the Salon of 1753, this painting was one of a pair of overdoors from Bellevue, a chteau belonging to Madame de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV and Bouchers most important patron.. The Sorrow of Telemachus 1783 Angelica Kauffmann Swiss Kauffmann was born in Switzerland but made her reputation in Italy and England, where she was a founding member of the Royal Academy. This painting and its pendant were executed in Rome for Monsignor Onorato Caetani, who in the same year had his portrait painted by Kauffmann. His later portraits by Mengs in 1779 and Batoni in 1782 attest to the tight-knit, international character of eighteenth-century Roman intellectual circles. Kauffmanns subjects are taken from François Fénelons romance The Adventures of Telemachus, first published in 1699. Paters reception piece to the Académie Royale in 1728 was The Soldiers Merrymaking. Like Watteau, Pater probably knew such subjects firsthand in the wake of Louis XIVs waning military success. Rather than depict triumphant or heroic combat, in the manner of battle painters, Pater focused on the improvised camps where soldiers slept, smoked, drank, and ate in the company of women..
