Poland, Warsaw. The catastrophe of the Holy Cross Church, origin of the persecution of the Jews in Russia. On 25 December 1881, a Jew thief was caught in the act of stealing from a lady's pocket inside the temple, which was crowded with worshippers. In order to escape arrest, he shouted 'fire!', causing several people to flee in terror and run over each other. Twenty-nine persons died. Engraving by Tomás Carlos Capuz. History of Spain. The Esquilache Riots. Uprising that took place in Madrid between 23 and 26 March 1766 and whose pretext was the measures taken by the Marquis of Esquilache (1700-1785) on the use of the traditional long cloaks and wide-brimmed hats. The shortage of bread and the rising price of basic goods contributed to the revolt. As a result of these continuing protests, King Charles III dismissed Esquilache and ordered prices to be lowered. This print was titled : Representation of the ceremonies of the baptism of Mon. le Dauphin and Mes Dames, ses soeurs, at Fontainbleau, 14th day 7bre 1606. The artists responsible were Jean le Clerc and. L. Gaultier. Also noted in the ancient text, where the illustration appears, is that the ceremony represented took place 5 years after the birth of Louis XIII. The illustration shows the baptism of the dauphin (the future Louis XIII) and his sisters on september 14, 1606, at Fontainbleau in France. Louis XIII reigned from 1610 to 1643.
