Prick Spur 13th century German The prick spur was the first type of spur to be invented, and it consists of a goad or prick, more or less pointed, connected to side arms or a heel plate. The earliest spurs were probably simple thorns attached at the back of the heel, before they started to be made out of metal in antiquity. Prick spurs were the main type of spurs used in the Middle Ages until the mid-14th century, when they were supplanted by rowel spurs, which appeared in Europe a century before and with which they had cohabitated for a time. As a knights status was closely related to his horse, spurs became one of the symbols of chivalry, and one of the tokens given to him during his knighting.. Prick Spur. German. 13th century. Key 15th-16th century German The decoration of Gothic iron locks and keys was often elaborate and of the highest standard of workmanship. The motifs were frequently drawn from Gothic architecture, reproducing on a miniature scale complicated tracery patterns and even tiny statuettes. A number of these tiny locks were compound, with some of the mechanisms concealed from view, and required two or even three keys used in sequence to open them. It has been suggested that the greatly expanded use of locks on doors, or coffrets and other types of storage chests was a result of the increasing urbanization of life and the new emphasis on material wealth and private ownership which developed in the late Middle Ages.. Snaffle Bit 3rd century B.C. Thracian or Anatolian The mouthpiece consists of two canons studded with rounded spikes, linked by a ring in the center. Each one terminates with a ring for the reins and a long and straight full-cheek piece, pierced with two holes for hanging it from the bridle.This very submissive type of snaffle was inspired by both Achaemenid and Greek bits. The spiky canons, called 'hedgehogs' by the Greek Xenophon (ca. 430-355 B.C.) in his equestrian treatise, accentuate its severity. These elements being very uncomfortable for the tongue, they force the horse to retract it. Consequently the tongue cannot cushion the bit and the mouthpiece is resting directly on the most sensitive part of the bars (part of the horses jaw without teeth). The very long cheekpieces added control for changing directions by pressing the horse's cheek when pulling the opposite rein.This bit is said to have been found in Rome. If true, it might have come from the tomb of a Thracian or Anato

Rowel Spur (Right) late 13th- first half 14th century possibly French This spur belongs to the first type of rowel spur developed. The first rowel spurs, featuring a revolving disc or star at the end of the neck, appeared in western Europe around the mid 13th century. In this region they cohabitated with the earlier form, the prick spur, for about a century, before replacing it almost completely by the mid 14th century. The advantage of the rowel spur over the prick was it allowed the rider to reach the flanks of its horse with one of the points whatever the angle of its foot, which was very convenient regarding the riding position of the time, with long stirrups-leathers and extended legs. The fact that the rowel rolled against the horse instead of hitting it directly reduced also the probability of injuring it too seriously.. Part of a candle wreath. The two-arms with crabs decorated turner is provided with the sign III when the turns. The left arm is noticed in view of three points, the right arm with three notches. The fat catchers are round and are decorated on top and bottom with fine grooved rings. They have a holronde and straight slanted edge, which turns down in a serrated garage. The fat catchers are equipped with the signs consisting of three points or III at the top. The six stand-up surfaces are marked around and rectangular in the candle holders, which are marked with three and five points. They stand on holronde legs, which proceed to a saddle pedestal, including the end with the thread.
