Embroidered Sampler 1798 Priscilla T. Glover This piece belongs to a group of the least formal samplers thought to have been made under the tutelage of one Salem teacher. Worked in silk on a green linsey-woolsey ground, they often have flowering vine borders and a crisscross woven basket of flowers. More elegant versions of this type of basket can be found as carved ornaments on Federal furniture made in the Salem area. Other motifs on this sampler--the sawtooth border and the row of stylized strawberries beneath Priscilla's name--relate to earlier local examples. The motto on this sampler seems to have been particularly popular; it is also stitched on Rebekah Munro's Providence sampler (ca. 1791; 1984.331.13) and Emily Kittredge's sampler from Nelson, New Hampshire (1826; 1984.331.5).. Sampler Anna Huntington American 1803 Anna Huntingtons sampler, completed in 1803, belongs to a group of only three samplers from Franklin, Connecticut, which are thought to have been made under the instruction of the Misses Nott, who educated young ladies in the parsonage of their father, Congregationalist minister and educator Reverend Samuel Nott (1754-1852). Her sampler, and that of Laura Hyde (MMA 44.113) are graphically striking, and unique in that they are embroidered with scenes from parts of the world that were just opening to trade with the United States at the time they were stitched. They both feature images of American sailing ships in faraway locales; Annas sampler depicts views of the walled city of Jerusalem and The Levant, with American ships in a choppy harbor, while Lauras sampler shows scenes of India Within the Ganges and The Bay of Bengal. Embroidered sampler 1784 Mary Austin Mary Austin attended one of the many schools that flourished in Salem in the late eighteenth century. At one time, all samplers stitched with long stitches in unraveled silk thread were considered the work of girls who had studied at Mrs. Sarah Stivour's School (1778-88), since that was the only Salem school ever named in samplers. Embroidered Sampler made at the Female Association Quaker School December 23, 1813 Embroidered by Charlotte Gardner The Quakers were the first group to believe that female education should equal that of males, and that children of all classes and races should be educated. To this end, in the early years of the nineteenth century, they formed the first schools for non-elite girls in New York Citythe Female Association Schools. These schools became the seed from which New York City’s public school system grew. This example is an extremely rare sampler made in 1813 by a twelve-year-old girl named Charlotte Gardiner who attended the first Female Association School. According to the inscription, Charlotte made the sampler for Mary M. Perkins, a member of a prominent New York Quaker family and a patron of the school.. Embroidered Sampler 1827 Barbara Landis Compared to Barbara Beiler's sampler made seventeen years earlier (34.100.216), Barbara Landis's example shows more of the influence of her English-speaking neighbors. Barbara Landis was a member of the Mennonite sect, and German would have been spoken in her home. Her family, however, must have had some interaction with neighbors outside their immediate group, since Barbara's rather awkwardly spelled motto is traditionally found on samplers made by girls who lived in Pennsylvania's English community. The use of a house as a central motif is also very rare in Pennsylvania German samplers and again illustrates links Barbara must have had with the wider world.. Embroidered Sampler 14053

Following a prescribed format, these samplers list the birth and marriage dates of the parents; and the name and birth date of each of their children. Hilya (Votive Tablet) second half of 18th century Hilya, Arabic for "ornament," refers to a genre of Ottoman Turkish literature associated with the physical description of Muhammad. The concept originated from the shamayil, the study of Muhammads appearance and character. According to Ottoman belief, reading or possessing an account of Muhammads attributes protects one from danger, harm, evil, and sickness. It became customary to carry a hilya in the form of a scroll, calligraphic study, or an amulet. In the seventeenth century, hilyas developed into an art form with a standardized layout.. The Book of Kells (Irish: Leabhar Cheanannais) (Dublin, Trinity College Library, MS A. I. (58), sometimes known as the Book of Columba) is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament together with various prefatory texts and tables. It was created by Celtic monks ca. 800 or slightly earlier. The text of the Gospels is largely drawn from the Vulgate, although it also includes several passages drawn from the earlier versions of the Bible known as the Vetus Latina. It is a masterwork of Western calligraphy and represents the pinnacle of Insular illumination. It is also widely regarded as Ireland's finest national treasure. The illustrations and ornamentation of the Book of Kells surpass that of other Insular Gospel books in extravagance and complexity. French Calendar for the Year 1816 (Galerie Generale des Souverains des Etats Européens) 1816 Chevalier Henry Guillot This 1816 French calendar dates from just after the reinstatement of the French monarchy (1814) and signifies the return to the traditional calendar in France. This is emphasized by the focus of the illustrations of this calendar on the contemporary monarchs ruling Europe, starting with King Louis XVIII. The calendar is mounted double-sided onto a red leather and gold-tooled support. On the recto the months January through June are visible, and on the verso the months July through December. At the top of the mount, the French royal coat of arms has been added in gold tooling, suggesting that this may have been a royal gift. The way in which the calendar is mounted shows how ephemeral works on paper could have been used/been on display in a day-to-day setting..
